Mailbag for Friday, January 22, 2001

This week's Mailbag topic:

What was your favorite EarthBound area?

Here's this week's mailbag, with co-answer person yourmamasmama!

Disproven Wackiness

My favorite area in EarthBound is Fiveville, where you can go once you get the Meteorite Bat from Picky at the Onett hotel. I am not making this up. Someone else made it up. I'm merely relating the story.

Anyway, Fiveville is a magical land where, when enemies attack you, you actually gain HP, the sun is shining and life is beautiful all the time. Plus you can find super SECRET weapons, such as the deadly Video Relaxant and Temporary Goods, that crank your offense up to 65535, making you so powerful that when you fight Giygas, he runs away. And then you have to get in a spaceship and take him, and suddenly you're playing the (also secretly installed in the game) arcade classic Galaga!

~CPTCrunch

Oh, but you've forgot a few details my friend. Fiveville is located on the little island with the castle that is on the left when you're riding the boat to Scaraba. Also keep in mind that this area of the game is only in a few defective cartridges, and in English only. Everybody knows that the guy who localized EarthBound for America by editing out the word 'Bar', and changing the octupus statue to a pencil got bored and made a whole new town. It's common knowledge.

~diospadre

Isn't that where reid lives?

200X Would be Better

Oh no! my town map is overdue! remember how on mother2 they said it was due in the year 2001!? the feds are coming to get us man! the feds are comin!! their gonna get us all man! all of us man!

~ufsrj2

Ok see the way I got out of it was that my library card was marked valid starting 199X. Since there obviously is no 199X, I was able to bypass any penalties by blaming it on the librarian's stupidity. For those of you people out there who aren't as eleoquent or charming as I am, I suggest you hoof it to Mexico.

~diospadre

If they don't get you for the map, they'll get you for the lack of capitalization.

Livin It Up in the Hotel Du'Summers

I compliment your site once again, for it is sweet.

Anyways, Id have to say that my favorite area in Earthbound is summers. It just has this cool look and kick back feeling to it. It has a great hotel, a club, and even a dock. The beach is a nice place to hang out if your feeling bored. There is even a myna bird, which provides HOURS of fun! Also, there is a lady that sells magic cake if your feeling hungry. If you just run out of things to do, you can take a boat to Scaraba, (where there isnt nearly as much stuff to do as in Summers,(maybe just look at pyramids,)). This is why Summers is the number one hang out.

And, by the way, I have one question. On the Mother 2 Soundtrack, what is the name of the final "PSI Mix"? I believe that it is track 14. I have been scanning Napster, but I cant remember what it is called... Oh, well. If you guys arent too busy, it be great if you could tell me... Oh, and once again, nice site. That should be just be about 200 words. Exactly 200 words.

~Shok_13

200 words, good for you. I love the Scaraba music, especially when it picks up some with that funky...okay I don't know what instrument that is. Anyway the Mix you're looking for is called 'Another 2.' As with all things EB, it can be hard to find, so do yourself a favor and get in #starmen and get it from Aquas.

~diospadre

I don't think they even put that many words in travel pamphlets. I bet you could tell me popular places to dine and rent a jetski is Summers, too.

My essay on my favorite area in Earthbound. {/end essay}

My favorite place in EB is definitly Magicant. Only cuz you get to go there on rare occasions, unlike the beginning of the game, which you can just start a new game to get to. Also Magicant is freaky + cool with all the neon crap and dead people. Magicant is on my fav list right next to the tunnel of time, cuz the tunnel of time is just... cool. Anyways, here's a challenge for you! Get to Ness's Nightmare with a flying man! Sure we've all tried it, but have you actually ever done it? (I have!)

~Stkboy87

Hey you like Magicant for the same reason I like Moonside. Unlike other areas of the game, you are only allowed the privelage of playing it for a few fleeting moments. I found a little trick, though. If you walk around like an idiot and dont do anything or talk to anyone in either place, you get to stay forever! Forever!!! Ahahahahahaha...

Sorry.

~diospadre

I would hope that if I entered my own mind, that my idea of courage wouldn't be Big Bird on steroids.

~yourmamasmama

Mailbag Again!

I had a great letter from before, but it was probably deleted... the short version is "How does the mailbag guest answerer system work?" The long version had magical elves, FBI agents, and so on. Just now I thought it'd be fun to offer the guest position as a prize for some contest. PS. I like Moonside. 'Nuff said.

~SimonBob

Well YMM is gonna feed you some lies about me being a goblin or something, so I'll be straight with you. When I pick a Mailbag co-person, I usually go into #smnet, look at the people list and /msg them telling they get the honor of doing mailbag. Easy as that. Maybe I'll offer it as a prize or something should people care. Do you?

~diospadre

You seem to already know the answer. dios, the magical elf, has a group of FBI agents torture the staff, and whoever stays conscious the whole time is the winner. The prize is either guest mailbag person for a day or a signed picture of dios with his shirt off. Most people take the mailbag because one day of torture is enough.

It's good to know that oeioke outside of our little community really care about the game. I must say, though, his grammar reminds me of our newly crowned leader, George "W." Bush: "Every two child did, I will."

~diospadre

And I thought I was the only one that pushed the pissin' on-line! It's like he can see very easy into my soul!

Mabe I Will, Mabe I Will

Dear starmen,

I think it is stupid that they cant have earthbound because it has bugs and problems. I mean, it works perfect in Japan so why doen't it here? All nintendo has to do is change the text of a Japanese version to american and were good to go.

Mabe you can ask nintendo these questions.

~wills

I think you're a bit confused. While EB64 wasn't released in the states, It also never enjoyed a release in Japan (notice the capitalization of 'it'.) So while there were bugs, the biggest problem was that the game was never finished. So sad...

~diospadre

I saw Nintendo the other day so I asked them, and they told me it's just a big conspiracy to trick "those dirty Yankees."

~yourmamasmama

That Magic Ant (Man)

I think the best place in Earthbound has got to be Magicant. I get this weird shiver whenever I go there. Especially when I fight Ness' Nightmare. It is funny to see how everybody affects the colors of Magicant and it tells you something about everybody.

~Jeff

Yes, Magicant good. I'm sorry, but my Magicant bag is empty. Take it, YMM.

~diospadre

I think Magicant tells you most about Ness's family. He remembers everybody: Mom, Tracy, King, and Telephone. One big happy family.

~yourmamasmama

Books...? What's That?

If they can't make a game, couldn't they at least write a book as a sequal. I need more Earthboound. I have waited since I finished the game for a sequal. From the SNES, to the N64. The only game that comes close to EarthBound is Chrono Trigger. They should finish the story, even if they don't finish it in a game. (possible thought coming here, sequal fan stories, people write in their own stories on Earthbound)

~EBFan

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing the other day or month or whatever. I'd really like to see how EarthBound 64 was part of the one we know and love, and a book, or maybe script, would probably be our best hope. I was excited about the Zelda TOoT, too, but then I found out it cost money and I had to go to a store or something.

~diospadre

Better yet, why not make a movie. Think about it, Earthbound: The Movie. It could join the ranks of other great video game movies like Super Mario Bros: The Movie and Street Fighter!

~yourmamasmama

Some Nuts

I like everyplace, but I esspecially DON'T like Magicant. When I couldn't beat Ness's NiteMare. I ripped my hair out for days, thinking, and then I relised the controller wasn't in.

~Tobias26

Wait, how'd you get to Ness's Nightmare without the controller plugged in? Are you lying!?

~diospadre

WHy does the only person other than me that doesn't like Magicant have be the nutcase? And, btw, the best place in EB is Dungeon Man and you are all just too scared to say it.
