Mailbag for Monday, February 28, 2001

This week's mailbag topic:

New layout. Your thoughts?

Here's this week's mailbag, with co-answer person Jamie_M!

Exp exp exp!

I've heard that in Earthbound (Mother 2) there is an enemy named Worm that looks identical to the Criminal Caterpillar except the fact that he is pink. I've never encountered this guy. Where is he? I went on a mad quest to find him for the past couple of days but with no such luck. Where can he be found?

~theplagueratofdoom

The enemy you're thinking of is the Master Criminal Worm. You can find him in the desert just South of Scaraba. I've only found him once, because I am scared of sunstroke (seriously seeing my character's sweat freaks me out for some reason.) Anyway he gives at least ten million EXP, but you'd better hope for a green swirl because he's tough to beat.

~diospadre

I aint never heard of a Pink Worm....Its probably just a conspiracy, much like the concpiracy of Iowa.

~Jamie_M

Blah blah blah...

Just finished reading Mailbag #43. I don't know why I always forget to read these things, but I'm now trying to finally get caught up. (Thank goodness diospradre's updates are timed so well. How thoughtful of him to space them out like this so people can have a chance to properly appreciate the Mailbag in all its recherce excellence. :P) So far, I've been both surprised and impressed with the level of wisdom y'all demonstrate in the cogency and erudition of your replies. On the other hand, with many of them I'd be compelled to say, "...What the hey is this?" It seems like there's a 32/128 chance of getting a dios/co-answer person team that's hopped up on blueberry muffins. (And who came up with the idea of the Stupid Box? As if the local mouth-breathers weren't getting enough encouragement already... :/)

What immediately attracted my attention about the last mailbatch (meaning 43, if you were dozing off at the beginning of this letter) was the letter Cliff Spradlin got from Keiichi Suzuki! That's, like, the most incredibly awesome thing ever, and yet dios and YMM were strangely indifferent. I sensed some underlying confusion behind their totally inadequate response, so I'll try to set a couple things straight.

Suzuki-san was ostensibly plugging the MOONRIDERS feat.MAA site at http://moonriders.maa.gr.jp/ , and its free copies of "Pissin' till I die" and "Pissism" (their titles, not mine ::). You can find them in bazillions of different formats on the "Piss to the digital airground" download page (gotta love that wacky beatnik Japlish). 'sCool 'cause it's guaranteed that there'll be something for everyone. The songs are pretty good and show off MR's characteristic weirdness and energy -- the first begins with sort of a bluegrass/pop/hip-hop/rock thing and goes all over the place from there (rap/enka/soul/disco? :!), and the other is mostly Latin, somewhat Westernish, and utterly indescribable. It's really something you have to experience yourself. Your impression may be entirely different if you understand Japanese -- I got the feeling that tons of stuff was going over my head (but I liked 'em anyway).

Once you're done listening, remember to fill out the comment form at the bottom of the page. I would have done it myself, but not being able to tell the difference between (say) the 'MOONRIDERS suck' and the 'MOONRIDERS rule' button kinda hampers things. If anyone needs a bag of groundhogite... :S On to MB44, then.

~(The Guppi)

I thank you for your praise, and would like to reaffirm that the stupid box was created by me. Well, kinda. Back in the day EBounding had a "And now for something completely different box," but mine is just dumber.

As for the rest of your letter, we were VERY excited to have received word from Suzuki. The thing is I and other SM.net staffers got that e-mail about a week before I put it in the mailbag, so most of the people that frequent #starmen already knew about it. The excitement had died down and the new 'in' thing was the "push the pissin online" quote (try to kick me from here, Buddy!)

~diospadre

ey? You know what they always say Mailbag a week, keeps Tomato from beating you up and eating you alive. ( I don't do rhymes) As for the Suzuki e-mail, Suzuki is a cool guy. I love his music, especially Ness' theme.

C is for Cookie

Heya. I think that the little icons on the left hand sidebar are kind of neat. How long do they take to make? I mean, it can't be like making chocolate chip cookies... or CAN it?

~Godeg

I was going to ask reidman, but he's not here now. I'll say that he just sticks some crap into that little rectangle with the triangle template he's got going, so it really can't take more than 2 minutes. reidman's just a whiner, afterall.

~diospadre

Actually, they are made by little creatures that resmeble Oompa Loompas. reid keeps em in his basement and gives them freezie pops once a week ( not the blue ones, he keeps those for himself)

And as for making chocolate chip cookies goes, I cant even make Pilsbury cookies.

~Jamie_M

Tomato's Article

Just read Tomato's awesome Mother 3 article. I think in the mean time we should start seeing if EarthBound(Mother 2) can be released for GB color of GB advanced. The Game Boy color is almost up to the capabilpity and the GBA is completely up to it!!!!

~Baron Fel

Yeah, I think I'd rather have Mother 3 on a Game Boy system too. I do think that Game Boy is crap though, but it'd be well worth it to buy one if an EB game was released on it.

~diospadre

I enjoyed Tomato's article on Mother 3, it was insightful and informative. I wish that Mother 2 and/or 3 would come out for another system, whether it be GBA or GC.

It may happen, but in the mean time have fun plyin EB, I do.

~Jamie_M

First Tim Submitter

Hey! I can't believe that I have never submitted to the mailbag before. Well is it on.

*Picky punches the microphone and breaks it, he has to wait a few seconds while the magical microphone elves bring him a new one.

The new design? It is awesome. Heh, I tried using PSP once and it didn't turn out to well, as a matter of fact I think that I might still have the "image" on my hard drive. So that helps me appreciate the excellent layout that much more. :)

Its really cool how you have the starmen badge thing-a-ma-jig at the top of all the update cause every time I see that in the corner of the updates I think of starmen and then I think of EarthBound and then I have a craving to play EB and then I go over to my SNES and discover that my sister disconnected it so I force her to connect it again cause I am too lazy to do it myself and then finally I eat EB. err.. I mean play EB. O_o. Then I go and eat sugar products and then I submit to the mailbag.

I sure hope that there isn't a wordcount limit or anything. Cause I wouldn't want my first letter to be cut off. Well getting bac

~Picky

Hoiw come the only people who use PSP other than me are crappy at graphics. Wait a minute, I'm crappy at graphics too, nevermind. As for your eating habits, you sure are weird. And from now on try to think of better letter conclusions, yours wasn't funny.

~diospadre

ROFL. Well, it appears as though your letter WAS cut off....As for the new layout, It is super awesuma and reid, dios and Tomato deserve a big thanks. And please Picky, Lay off the sugar, You are scarin me

~Jamie_M

Players Guide

What's the easist way to get an Earthbound Players Guide? My brother's friend said I can just call up Nintendo Power and buy one from them. Also I don't have a credit card so I can't order one online. Help me. please. The fate of the universe lies in the balance.

~plagueratofdoom

Calling up Nintendo is probably the best way. I think that's what NeoPaula did. You can also get one if you subscribe to Nintendo Power. Supplies are limited, act fast.

However, the real question is how you got past my filter-o-matic* and had two letters in the mailbag this week.

*Filter-o-matic does not exist.

~diospadre

The easiest Way to get a Players guide is this. Go to Aquas house beat him up and take his, and his burritos too.

Look in old electronics stores, and EBAY, you do not need a credit card to buy off of EBAY

~Jamie_M

Absitively

The new layout is absolutly, posolutly, supa-coo! It gives that fresh, stone-edge quality, and spirit that was lacking in the old regime. Get back in the game! Tecnique.

--Don't you love my mailbag responces!?

~ROBJPUB

We have a regime? I think since we're still in our first generation of leadership that it makes us some kind of dictatorship, like Mexico back in the 1800's. Or something.

~diospadre

It is super cool, I love the colour schemes and all, and I do love your mailbag responSes.

~Jamie_M

Yum yum yum! Delicioso!

I love the new layout! Heh, it is very yummy. I really like the part in the upper left where the blue thing has the little triangle stuff on it and it's martched up exactly where that would be on the starman. The only part that I think is un-yummy is the fact that if I'm on my old computer which I can only get 640x480 resolution I have to scroll over. Very un-yummy! Other than that good job and be yummy.

~ZaphodBee

When reidman first showed us the previews of the new design we were quoted as saying things such as 'sweet' and 'cool'. That badge/medal thing is one of my favorite things. One of the neat little tidbits that didn't make it in to the final design was a scene from Luna's M2 manga behind the 'Latest News' image. As for the scrolling, get a new computer you caveman. In any case, reid designed it so that you only have to scroll if you need to see the rightbar. I think. I'll go check. Yup, you can see the boxes just fine. And my God, 640x480 sucks.

~diospadre

Ok, Did you type this while in front of your refridgerator??? Most people now use 800 x 600, so it was more practical to go to the new layout I use 640 x 480 too, but I dont have a prob really.

~Jamie_M

PHP?

The design looks nice and stuff, except I haven't noticed anything new. I know its written in PHP, but what has PHP done to make a big change in how the site runs.

~Orbfighter

Wait and see. Right now the site doesn't seem different from the old one except in terms of appearance, but I'm sure Tomato's got a bunch of nifty, neato, and possibly even far-out tricks up his sleeve (stem).

~diospadre

I am no PHP expert, but it makes it a lot easier for designing and writing the pages, I think dios would be a lot better to answer your question.

~Jamie_M

Layout Stuffage

Maybe it's because I'm staff & I find it much easier to code for, but I think the new layout is great. I also like how it doesn't take up only the left half of the screen, leaving the right half completely empty. Although I did prefer the red arrow next to the updated sections, rather than the yellow "*NEW!*" thing, and I'd rather have the display fill the whole screen width rather than 4/5 of it. Other than that, I can't really find much else to gripe about.

~LousySpy

I liked that red arrow too. It seemed more subtle. However the *New!* makes you feel like you need to visit it so you don't feel naughty, which is probably a good thing.

~diospadre

Well said my friend, well said. I am new to PHP and I am still workin out the kinks, but other than that, I love it.

~Jamie_M

The Stupid Box

DIOS, I'M GOING TO KILL YOU, THEN KILL YOU AGAIN!!!!

(This letter was submitted by Luna, who has also been quoted as saying "Pillows are evil thongs." She also submitted this letter twice for some reason, proving that she's just not very smart. Boarding School, or 'Special' School? You decide.)
