What's your favourite EB tune?
News:
Mailbag for March 10th, 2002
Letter of the Week:
In my honest opinion. Keiichi Sezuki did a superb job selecting the theme for his music. It perfectly matches the modern-age esque EarthBound is set in. Sure a bit kooky at times, but that's what's good about it. There's so many cool songs from EarthBound I really have a hard time picking my favorite. If I had a pop gun to my head I would have to go with the Scaraba music or any of the battle/boss themes.
You may not believe this but when I first played it (I was about 8 years old) during battles when I was strong enough to just keep pressing the 'a' button to win. I would dance around the controller cord to the music, it was really weird. But no other game has got me to do that. And I can't complain with the sound effects.
I've always wanted to remix EarthBound tunes but I really lack the knowledge too, maybe someday I will. There ARE lots of great musicians in this community, and other vgame places that have extrodinary talent to remix game tunes. EarthBound really needs remixing love. If EarthBound wasn't so blatantly shunned with bad advertizing and constant repetition of "This game stinks." I believe EarthBound would be right up there with Chrono Trigger, but sadly it's not. oops im trailing off the topic, overall EB MUSIC=GOOD FOR DANCING AROUND CORDS WBAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA p.s get eb music @ ftp://mp3:mp3@wat3r.dhs.org

Congratulations on writing a Letter of the Week!
To be completely and totally honest, I had a severe shortage of well-written letters this week :/. Aquas has written a nice little letter here, though, so yay. Aaaannyyywaaayyy...
Aquas agrees with everyone else--EB Music=Good. Maybe I should've picked a more debatey topic. Oh well.
Congrats on the branding,

FWOOOSH KAPWINGG
My favourite sound in EarthBound is the "FWOOOSH KAPWINGG" that the Starman Jr. makes when he teleports in at the beginning of the game. How come Ness doesn't get a funky-cool teleport like that?
The absolute best thing about the music is that it's completely interchangeable. I can no longer walk into a store without humming the store theme, which of course was the Japanese Rent-A-Cop's song in JonBound, so I laugh to myself about policemen. EB music is a sound hacker's paradise.
--SimonBob

I never really thought of the Starman Jr Sound as "FWOOOSH KAPWINGG." I think that "FWOOOSH KAPWINGG" sounds more like the infamous Purple-Butt-in-the-black-
hole-of-Tomatoey-goodness breaking wind. FWOOOSH KAPWINGG!
--StarmanDeluxe

"FWOOOSH KAPWINGG" is also the sound a furby makes when you put it in the microwave. Oh, yeah, EB music. I hum the battle theme when I'm not done my homework and my teacher asks me about it. Yeah, it doesn't do much but, come on, we all love a little bit of microwaved furby sometimes.

Carpy is mean :(
The sound in EarthBound is great. I think my favorite song is "StarmanDeluze didn't post my mailbag letter from last week."
It's a unique title, and ya know, the beat is great. Makes me do the doo-wop wop doo wop all day looooooong.
I heard you bought SLing's CD. What's up with that?
--Carpainter

I wonder whether that "StarmanDeluze" typo was intentional or not :|. Yeah, I bought SLing's CD; it's actually pretty good. So go but it and stuff. Trancebound was fun, too. So yay.
--StarmanDeluxe

My favorite song is "Everyone gave carpy thier votes in clash so cyan got mad at me." It's awesome.
And the CD buying was a brib-- errr, compliment for letting him in clash.
No, it wasn't really.

0_o Pre-Napster Music Piracy?
The music is probbably the best part of earthbound, but mainly because it is all stolen. It just gives the game a much more realistic outpost (I.E. the hotel theme = "Whatever Lola Wants", al of the runaway 5 music=many, many jazz songs, ect...) And of course, playing the game at 8 yrs and hearing the game actually belch is always fun.
Then, of course, the Mr. Saturn theme hich is just delightful, and the battle themes are just great, namely the Crazed Hippie music. THis is one of the few games that actually had music that could creep me out, and that was the Happy Happy village theme (pre-paula)
--MutenElliot

I don't know whether to believe this or not; I've never heard it before. Have Miyamoto and Itoi and the EB-Music-Composer-Guy been doing some ILLEGAL MP3 HAX0RZ WAREZ PIRACY!?
--StarmanDeluxe

are you the same person who thinks lord of the rings is a ripoff of harry potter?

EVEN MORE MUSICAL LOVE
Sound effects are mostly bleeps, blips, bloops, and random noise, with the occasional recorded sample (such as the sirens, bird chirps, and the amazing belch). For the most part, sound effects are really rather simple, but they get the job done.
The music is the best part of the audio. Every piece fits so well with the environment and theme, from town themes, to battles, to happy bike rides. Instrument sample quality isn't very high, but it's executed so well it doesn't need to be (although it would've been nice). And not only does it fit well, it's also enjoyable enough to listen to it on its own.
Having recently started learning to play guitar, I've been practicing playing many game tunes, mostly EarthBound. The town themes are my current favorite practice songs since they're pleasant to listen to and aren't too involved, and once I've mastered them, I'll probably move on to some of the more complicated EB/Mother music.
And since the topic is music, I guess I'll plug my jazzy new MP3. http://www.jabcreations.com/lousyspy/music/ebjazz.mp3 If all of EB's music sounded this good, I could die a happy man.
--LousySpy

Argh, everyone thinks the same thing :( So boring.
--StarmanDeluxe

What's this? Advertizing time? www.mp3.com/Aaron_Doucet/ has some sweet -- uhm, tunes on it. Yeah.

It seems to me I've heard this before.
The music is good, and is topped only by SOME Final Fantasy games (and they have a friggin orchestra) My favorite tunes are Saturn Valley, Sound stone and... uh whats it called... i have no idea but its kind of a peacful tune, i think you hear it at sanctuaries (Think because my 2 games have been past all sanctuaries for quite some time and some else is using the 3 file oh well) anyway although there have been a few games which have some very good music such as Wild Arms (the opening theme and another which i dont know how to describe) they never have been as consistent as good ol' EB, one or two good ones and the others are o.k. Now then i must find a way to get that PSI Rockin' CD.
Hello and... Goodbye!

Haha, I have a PSI Rockin' CD and you don't! :p
And why does everyone have the same opinion on EB music!? Doesn't SOMEBODY out there think it sucks!?

They're more than good... They're GREAT!
The music in EB is grrrrrreat! Just like Frosted Flakes. Coincidence? I think not... is Jeff's roommate "Tony" really "Tony the Tiger"?!?!
....probably not. Anyway, I love the music in EarthBound, especially the Sound Stone tune, Twoson's theme, Fourside's theme, Scaraba's theme, and the Winters theme. And lots of other stuff too, good stuff, good stuff. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go eat some Frosted Flakes... ;)
--bulma_saturn

Personally, I think that that rabbit beats out Tony any day.
--StarmanDeluxe

I think cloud from FF7 is a weatherman in disguise! O_o. Also, if you name ness "rabbit" and your favorite food "trix" you can be all "HAHA YOU CANT GO HOME BECAUSE TRIX ARE FOR NOT YOU" And things like that.

EB Themes kick!
Well, I have a folder containing about 40 EC and EB0 MIDIs and sound effects, and I set the sound effects to various events on my desktop AND I use them in my RPG Maker games. I've always loved EB music. My faves are the complete Sound Stone, the end credits and the first Giygas battle.

Sheet music r teh unfun
Well, having lurked long enough, I decided I might make a post...
When I first played Earthbound, although I thought the music was nice, I never really thought it was up there with the classic's, such as Chrono Trigger, and the Final Fantasy series.
However, I recently downloaded some MIDI music of Earthbound, and along with EB SPC's, they now seem to dominate my playlist.
I think theme's such as "Twoson", "Winters", and all three ending tunes are really memorable. My all time favourite? A MIDI of the Eight Melodies (sound stone).
I even printed out some sheet music for Earthbound, but it's really hard to play :(
Oh.. And was anyone else inspired to write an RPG after playing Earthbound?
--Two

When I first played EarthBound, I didn't know what writing a program meant. Heh. I never tried to play any of the sheet music; I'm more of a singer, so sheet music doesn't help me too much.
--StarmanDeluxe

I was inspired to write an RPG, but it never happened. Maybe it's because I don't have 'teh crativitay' and 'teh dramatic skillz' to make an RPG. Or something like that.
Ok, heres a tip: Never coanswer mailbag at 6:30 in the morning X_X

I thought that Belch's burp was quite sexy, but I'm usually wrong about this sort of thing. Please don't quote me on that. Twoson's music owned, by the way.

Yay for EB Music (Again)
Let me start of by saying that EarthBound is one of the only games for my SNES that I actually play with the sound on. Maybe it't the New Age Retro Hippe Theme, maybe it's because of the opening chimes played when Onett changes from night to day, or maybe it's the groovy jazz sounds of the Runaway Five. There is just something about the music in EarthBound that sets it apart from other RPGs. No chanting, no church music, or no grand organ being played. Just fun, zany, and sometimes weird (ie. Inside Dungon Man) music. It sometimes tickles your ears with its blend of crazy "what-the-heck-were-the-composers-thinking" attitude. My personal EarthBound tune? Winter's Boarding House.
Then there are the sound effect. Forget the sword slashes of other RPGs, what other videogame do they have the sound of a butt being spanked? And what's up with Venus's voice? Even Miriah Carey being run over by a bus couldn't hit notes that high.
--Colin

I have never played a video game without the sound on. Say hi to Mr. Patient!
--StarmanDeluxe

The music in EB is so offbeat that I want to name my offbeat children "Keiichi Suzuki" (for the boys) and "Earthbound Music Venus Girl" (for the girls)!
Haha, god save the girl that bears my children...

Even More EB-Music-Loving-Stuff
It was the music, WAY ahead of its time. I could swear the first part of the final battle (My fav song in EB) was in REAL guitar. The sound effects were really nothing new to me.
As a matter of fact, it was great that some of the songs had parts of Mother/EB0 music, such as the Boss theme, and the beginning of the Final Battle (there it is, once again). So, alot of the music got me into the game. I really can't play a game if the music isn't something I could smash various objects with a sledgehammer to.
--KrazyKraken

Am I the only one who doesn't really like the Final Battle theme?
--StarmanDeluxe

I thought the music was real guitar too, but then I realized it'd be kinda creepy if there was a little man in my EB cart playing the guitar... I was a messed up and deprived child.

I AM NOT A THING!
Dear Mailbag person...thing...yeah,
The music in EB deserves golden awards. When you are forced to create music using only what is allowed in a 16-bit system, and you do THAT well, something should happen. Confetti should rain down over the composer, or the director could be onstage next to three other performers waiting to receive a prestigious award for 'Best Soundtrack'. Actually, I liked the music to this very important point -- before I knew that the EB Soundtrack even existed, I was recording my own video game music onto my computer. A couple of friends and I decided to record every single tune in EB and put in all on CD (which we did realize that it would take three CDs, but were ready for it). We recorded everything we could think of -- everything from the rockin' 1st part of the battle with Gigyas tune, down to the little half-minute hotel theme. We put it all on CDs and even made our own labels (giving credit to Hal, Ape, and Nintendo for the music, of course). The only thing of ours is our initials we put on the outside rim of the CD. There. I've told you of how impressed I am by it. I can only hope that Mother 3's soundtrack will be as good, if not better - because Mother 3 WILL happen....it must. :-)
--Pi Macleod

Now, if I were an idiot with no common sense, I would say "UGH WHAT A CHEAPO YOU RIPPED OFF PSI ROCKIN##@!&^%^." But I'm not an idiot, and I have a sense of time, so... Yeah. I recorded all the EB music onto a tape, heh. That was fun ;) I also did that with FFVI.
--StarmanDeluxe

Thing? You're calling SMDX a thing? It's not like he's Jamie_M and he has a questionable gender... (hehe jk jamie, please don't beat me up :( ) I thought of burning an EB CD, but I was too lazy and I realized it'd take me too long :/

Oldies Tend to be Goodies
I know this has not much to do with the topic besides the Earthbound part, but i wish i knew this community longer. This website is like a gathering of friends, like one of those high school reunions, and it is very impressive that all these Earthbound fans work together to achieve so much. Seeing that 10,013 signatures, although I couldnt read them all(Lol), has made me realize that this place is a real community and not just a site.
I congradulate Reidman and Tomato for making this site what it is, along with anyone else who has helped the site in anyway meaning assistant workers and fans.
That is it. I just had to say that after reading about... 100 of those signatures on the Petition.

The credits music rox0rz my sox0rz
Well, I can call myself somewhat of an expert on Earthbound music because I own a copy of the ever so wonderful PSI Rockin' (Thank you, Jonk) Now when I beat a game, I usually feel a little sad. The better the game is, the worse I feel when I beat it. So naturally, I was totally bummed out about beating Earthbound, which brings me to the favorite song part.
The best song in EB is the one they play in the credits, after the "cast" list stops scrolling. It starts pretty much normal, then goes into a sad sounding segment, and then to an uplifting ending. I hate to admit this, but when that sad part kicked in, I shed a few tears. The only other time I did that from a game was when I screwed up on Final Fantasy 3, and had Cid die. But since I can now hear the ending theme over and over again on PSI Rockin', I can tell what a great piece of work it really is. Oh, and how can I forget the battle with Giygas? That comes at a close second. 8-bit and death metal at the same time, ya gotta love it.
--50048 [Note from StarmanDeluxe: This person was formerly known as Yutz before he went clinically insane and became addicted to large numbers.]

The credits music rocked. When I was in 5th grade, I gave that music to my teacher on a floppy disk, and she agreed to play it once a week through the crappy computer speakers, heh.
--StarmanDeluxe

You wouldn't believe how many people said the credit music AND the giygas music were thier favorite. You should join a club! You can name it the Sarah club, since nobody is in the other sarah club.
