Are we really about to get Mother 3? What do you WANT it to be like, and what do you actually BELIEVE it will be like?

Mailbag for September 7th, 2002
Letter of the Week:
"Are we about to get Mother 3?"
But of course! Even Nintendo wouldn't pull our legs for this long! Also, Super Smash Brothers (the first one) reminded everyone of Kirby, Capt. Falcon, and all the other seemingly forgotten heros. Now that Melee has topped the charts, everyone should know about Ness now. And with the addition of the Earthbound trophies, more Earthbound fans are being made. The petition has gotten Nintendo's attention, so it's definently obvious that another Earthbound is on the way.
"What do you WANT it to be like?"
I want it to have a great storyline, just as Earthbound did. I won't care much for the graphics, as long as they aren't absolutly, insanely, horrible. It would be nice to see Ness as a ten-year-old boy, not an overweight toddler like in Melee, if he's in the game at all.
"...what do you actually BELIEVE it will be like?"
I believe it will give everyone the same fuzzy, Earthboundy feeling that Earthbound gave before. It will have the ATMs, the frying pans, the Mr. Saturns, the baseball bats, the coffee cups, the kooky space creatures, the exploding Sky Runners, and all the other things that Earthbound had, and more! Last but not least, a little message at the end of the end credits that says something like "Thank-you, Earthbound fans."
--Goldstarking

Congratulations on writing a Letter of the Week!
Bravo! Bravo! A winner is you! Solid proof that if you want to win Letter of the Week, you don't need to write novels and essays. A perfect answer.
Without a doubt, SSBM was - as Sephy put it - "Nintendo's Nuclear Testing Grounds". Since people responded well to Ness, it is very likely we will get a new Earthbound. And it's great to see you have a positive opinion on what will actually happen. A new Earthbound would need all the strange enemies and items, and above all, that warm fuzzy feeling.

Bleep Bloop Blop
eeesh. Nintendo always says they're going to release a game to cause par-taying in the streets, but they always pull a "Oh, did we say a release in may? we meant febuary of next year." I'm a patient man, I can take that. erk. ok, I can't. Of course, there was earthbound 64, which caused par-tays in not-so-many converted basements, and Nintendo let us down AGAIN by releasing it on a peripheral a 6 year old could predict would flop. (note to dude who posts these things, assuming you're not a cold, calculating robot: on the offchance this gets posted, I'm talking about the 64dd. I remember reading it was on the 64dd, at least. if it wasn't, please preserve the sanctity of my mailbox and delete the entire mentioniong of it before the ebjackals consume my sense of irony.) I think I can remember the story. there's this guy. he looks like the kind of guy who kills things in forests and eats them. And he's doing something in the plot, maybe he lost his way to the Indiana Jones convention, and his village/whatever is attacked by pigs dressed like angry romans. these things makeme miss the plot twists in earthbound like, fighting piles of human waste, and shooting fireworks at ultimate manifestations of evil...
But enough of my ranting. i can't wait for mother 3, and I'll be waiting for walmart to call the police to haul me and the 3 other earthbound fans in Tennessee away for throwing rocks at their storefronts and yelling at them to open the G****** doors at 2 am on the release day, regardless if I'm wearing a large hat and fighting pork the entire game.

Well, Nintendo's definately pulled that trick many times before. When was the original release date for EB64, 1998? However I must question Flint liking Indiana Jones. He strikes me as more of a Rolling Stones person.

Why'd I Put His Name Twice?
Of course we will get Mother 3. This community is so large that obviously recognizes this; with such a huge, centralized dedicated fanbase, a game such as Mother 3 would undoubtadely become popular and successful.
However, for such to happen it would have to keep with all the reasons Earthbound was so good.
I hope to see cutting edge graphics in the game because, besides everything that Earthbound can give us, graphics are something the new world of gaming look for. I would them to be cartoonish and yet wonderful at the same time, which would not be a problem on the Gamecube.
I want it to contain the same humor and attitude Earthbound carried, along with the goofiness, touching moments, etc. Whether Ness is in it or whatever is irrellevant, what is more important is an adherence to the wonderful feel of Earthbound.
I believe when Mother 3 is released, well, I'm not fully sure. I would suppose perhaps Nintendo would want to market Ness a little more, so maybe he actually would be in it. Returning things from EB would be sweet, and I'm looking forawrd to a whole lot of new things too.
Peace,
Arad

Hello, Arad. Hello, good mailbag letter. Hello, kitty.
*ahem* Anyhow, I suppose such a large community deserves such a game, but the question is whether or not that means anything. Nintendo know that we exist, but have they ever even been here? Who knows?
Personally, Id like the graphics to be done in a way very much like Super Mario Sunshine. Slightly cartoony elements in an suprisingly amazing realistic environment. And EB elements would rule too.

What, you haven't found it by now? Sir, there is a 90% chance that the object sitting upon your head is a 'hat'. That or a guinea pig.

Again Again!
Well, ive been waiting for Mother 3 since, well the beginning of Earthbound in US.
I want a really long game. I mean REALLY LONG! It would be nice to add some cool minigames but those would only be to wind down from game play! :)
but since nintendo isnt paying much attention i dont think i will get what i want.
I think we will get a good game because Itoi will be making it of course but nintendo probably wont give much money towards it.
like i always say:Nintendo can go to the "Bad" place.
-Niten (not ninten)
--Niten

Yum, nice long EarthBoundishness. All of these ideas and possibilites make my brain hunger. And a long game isn't really something Nintendo's never done before. We've yet to see what the Gamecube can really do. ...and until then, said "bad" place is still wide open.

Flint Rock
Well, I'd like Mother3 to be a continuation of Mother2. I mean, they left us hanging with the whole 'To Be Continued'('The End...?') thing. But, I kinda expect them to go all conspiracy on us and leave us hanging forever and continue with the story about Flint and all. Also somthing I'd like. Despite the good graphics and all, I hope they keep the battles looking about the same.
Yeah, that'd be nice...
--Raichu26

I was never a fan of cliffhangers. I really hope that EB is continued in the sequel. After all when things just stop all of a sudden it
Yeah, that'd be nice...

Eh... Heh?
so hope we get Mother 3! It would be soooooo awsome! Depending on if it was on N64 or GameCube, which it should be on GameCube, then it would be so much better by being able to work with better graphics. If Mother 3 does come out it should be a sequel of Mother 2, and not be mixed with other characters. Thats what made Earthbound Great! Being able to play a game as kids and use objects and weapons that no other game has ever done, the towns and people, and the the whole game play! I have never play a game better than Earthbound, and a sequel that follows Earthbound is what it should be, but they will probably make it the way it was meant to be made and with the characters and everything, but just having another Earthbound game is the only thing I really what!
--Ness Dx

Indeed. I also want a direct sequel. Not related too closely, but it needs Ness, Paula, bats, pans, hippies...all those little obscurities that made Earthbound pwn you, me, and the planet Earth.

This One's Long
(this uses my earthbound theories) (if i spell anything wrong, plz forgive me)
I WANT it to be:
Heres what the storyline will take place...
(most likely for the gamecube it will have 3 disks...)
You start off with some cut scenes off Buzz Buzz running...he turns a corner, starmen run by, etc. he runs into a chamber where he is greeted by Dr. Arionaughts
Buzz Buzz: Status Report!
Dr.:They found the base, You must go now before it's too late!
Buzz Buzz then climbs into the meteor, and using the flings out into space... where he looks back and sees as the base is destroyed.
Buzz Buzz:This must not come to pass...
Using the meteor coverd with xenoynite, the only substance that can withstand such a beeting, he flings accross space faster then the speed of light, then, the barrier between time, and space is begginning to falter.
Buzz Buzz:I hope this works.
In a blinding flash the barrier is broken. and a rift between time is formed, Buzz Buzz flies into it...
THEN it will feature basicaly a remake of the EarthBound BUT it will be in total 3-D inviroments, with fixed storyline, cut-scenes and movies, better music, battles that your characters actualy fight and you get to see them get injured, ect.
THEN since EarthBound was such a big game, if they remade it with sweet grapics it would probaly take up another disk (disk 2).
AFTER that, it will have DISK 3, which is what happened after EarthBound.
so all in all its including earthbound, and what happened so not only will the lovers of earthbound see a sequel, they will see the game they know and love,in a whole new view!
what we possibley WILL get:
a cheesy remake of it on the GBA. (if this is allready happening plz forgive me for i dont read much magazines)
well thats about it!
reply to my e-mail for any feed-back!

A very, very, very, very close runner-up for Letter of the Week this week. This is truly a best-case scenario. The best idea I've heard yet. If Mother 3 was anything like that, anything at all, I'd pay, like, two hundred dollars for it. Maybe more.

For Everything Else...
What I want Mother 3 to be like? Fun. Simple as that. If Mother 2 is any indication, you don't need the fanciest graphics or Matrix-style attitude to have a down-n'-dirty fun game. What I BELIEVE it'll be like... Maybe the remnants of Mother 3 N64 with some new ideas added. Either way, I trust the outcome will be good if the game gets announced. My 2 cents. Use them as you will.

(GuyInSummers takes TheFreak's two cents and buys a piece of candy)
Actually, this was a very good letter. Why? Because you are SO right! FUN is the most important thing in a game. Fun! FUN! Above all, M3 has to be fun. Not that fancy graphics would hurt.

We're All Doomed, Doomed...
I'm not going to comment on the first question because I'm a pessimist by nature and it'll make people unhappy or something. As for what I want it to be like, I think it should play like EarthBound only with more mini-games and side quests, fully orchestrated soundtrack (for parts when synths aren't appropriate, anyway... imagine the Fourside theme being played live by a jazz band... *drooooool*... sorry, my mind wanders), quirky graphics that aren't terribly realistic but look aesthetically pleasing, an involving storyline that has a few plot twists and such, and most of all, the same quirky sense of humor. And whatever they do, they should NOT include a player's guide as having one available for free was so enticing that I couldn't help but use it, and it ruined the experience. They should include fun stuff in the instruction manual, though, like the mostly nonsensical newspaper clippings in the EB player's guide. And with regards to what I actually believe it will be like... well, as I said before, I'm a pessimist and revealing my answer would make people unhappy or something.
--LousySpy

The best part about being a pessimist is that when good stuff happens, it feels great - unlike when bad stuff happens to optimists. I, however, really believe we're getting M3. I hadn't really thought about the music for it. Now that I imagine the GCN orchestra playing jazzy EB tunes in full, long, multiple-movement splendor...aww man I GOTTA' have M3 now.

Welcome to the Zero Zone
Mother 3? For sure. I hope that it will be quite similar to Mother 2, but be unique in its own way. I hope it brings back the name all your friends, your PSI and food. Itoi's game was a masterpiece of Nintendo technology, and deserves to have some parts brought back. However, some of the battle parts could be made awesome. Like PSI animations and being able to see the the characters. I could list other things that could be brought back and new features, but nobody has time to read a 12-page letter. I'll leave it at one thing that will be certain: if Mother 3 comes, it will be a joyous occasion for all.
--Ness's Cousin

Since you didn't write a 12-page letter, you get the lowly last position.
Note to people - SARCASM! Do NOT start sending me only letters that could be passed off as the Declaration of Independance.
Ness's Cousin seems to wish for a lot to be brought back from EB, just like me. And really, would it be EB if you couldn't name your character, food and PSI?

Conclusion
Seen worse. This was a good week. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite compare to last week's incredible stash. You can do it, guys! Oh, yes. Apparently, some people (well, two, anyway) thought I was too harsh on my Mailbag replies. So, this week, I listened to Pollyanna while responding. This didn't quite work right...it didn't make me happy, just mellow. So then, halfway through, I tried a SSBM F-Zero theme. Remember, folks...music can hurt you. until next week, this is GuyInSummers, signing off.
