Would you like to be a staffer at Starmen.net? What section would you manage?
News:
Mailbag for October 27th, 2002
Letter of the Week:
I would absolutely love to be a Starmen.net staffer, only, it's like watching that Ring video; once you become a staffer, you have 7 days until you are never heard from again.
In all seriousness, I would like to be a staffer here because I'd like to give back to the site that gave so much to me... like that flashing kitten induced seizure. Ah, the memories. *sniff*
But which section would I like to maintain? It would have to be something that I would like doing, and that I would be able to make my own content for as well as have ideas on how to improve the section. The articles section sticks out in my mind. (you can relax, GiS, I'm not out for your job. There aren't enough hot babes in the Mailbag section if you know what I mean. There aren't any, right?)
I would love to breathe new life into the articles section, starting by posting that finely written article of mine that I submitted a month ago. I think I'd be a natural at the job, because let's face it, half of my forum posts are article length anyway, so I might as well put all of them in a cool link titled "Para's Swinging Corner of Fun Fun Joy."
My first job would be to read all of the articles in the section. Then I would be able to go around plugging various articles for various topics, creating a massive influx of page views for the article section that will make Tomato happy. Granted, some of those views will invariably be from false links such as "Hot Naked *insert your preference here*", but it's the end results that count, not the means. (Didn't Wampa use similar tactics with links promising to lead to "funny flukes?")
I would also like to try out some new ideas with the section. Maybe there could be a bounty thing where people can request certain articles or maybe I could hold a weekly "identify the article" contest for badges. The one thing I know the article section needs is better organization. The current organization has articles listed under their author's names. There definitely needs to be an organization that sorts the articles by topic.
The only thing that I'd have a problem with is using K++-^2 or Advanced Basic or whatever you peoples use for programing. I'm sure I could figure it out with a small amount of effort. Then I could join the ranks with the other staffers in trying to come up with the wittiest titles for my update posts- usually some meaningless ramble about not having enough sleep or the kitten or something.

Congrats on writing a Letter of the Week!
Excellent! You really have what it takes to manage Articles well. On some side notes, thank you for not wanting my job, but yes, there are hot babes in Mailbag. So ha. Now, Articles is a section that has unfortunately been neglected. We really need somebody to breathe new life into it, and you may be the guy to do it. It’s good to know you’re ready to update on time, come with new ideas, and are prepared to make your own contact. However, copying Wampa only leads to destruction. So don’t. Also, I’m not sure if we should turn Articles into something with rewards. It’s just one of those things in which the reward is to be known for your excellent article and to read the articles of others. That’s why I don’t give our Mailbag badges. (The name rank was just a celebratory thing.) And don’t worry. You don’t need to know a programming language. Just HTML. If you’re hired and don’t know HTML, Tomato was obviously drinking.

Me? A staffer? Ha! Ha ha ha! Bahahahaha! Bwahahahahahaha! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAA!!!
Tell PappyCat that she won't hear the black helicopters coming as they'll be in whisper mode.
--SimonBob

Heh. SimonBob, a staffer? Tell me that wouldn’t be stupid! Especially if he was a Fanfic staffer! With an update icon that looked like Frank! Now that would just be beyond moronic! I mean, what a lame idea! How pointless. How utterly...(GiS notices SimonBob’s evil stare) ... nevermind.
Pappy, kindly watch the skies.

He’s An Expert!
If I worked at Starmen, net I would run a strategy section. I have played Earthbound way to many times and continue to replay and replay it. I know everything there is to know about this game, or if I don't, I'd know how to find out. I think this would be a great section for people because I don't know of any other place where someone can get help from an expert (like me!).
--Cokesplash

I believe we sorta’ kinda’ have a strategy section. Well, we have the strategy in the EarthBound section and we have the Newsletter. Do those count?

This...Is...My Job...
Yeah, it'd be fun to be an SM.Net staffer. I'd probably be AoE or Polls. AoE would just be fun to do, since I think running contests is fun. I contribute to it whenever I can, and love to see the submissions. Polls would be fun to see how everyone votes. It would be fun, too.
Of course, I could always try to take over your job, GiS.

You can’t have my job. You can have d’Jeu’s job. In fact, please take d’Jeu’s job.

New En-ger-lind
The idea of beeing Big Cheif Letter Mailbag Man sounds cool, which I guess is your job. The fact is, people will flood in with entries depending on what topic you put up. I suppose it's kinda fun to put up the top ; 'What do you think of Starmen.net finally calling it a day' and watch the people show their true colours (yeah I spell colour with a u! A U! That's coz I'm En-ger-lish)You can take peoples ideas that they have written, and use them for yourself also. It just seems like fun toying with people's emotions and what have you...
--Hawian Shirts

Yep, my job. It’s definitely a ton of fun. Seeing what people think, how they react, and what topics interest them. Like the topic I’m replying to now, which went very well. It also gives me a chance to unleash my evil side, which I don’t like to do on the forums.

ZombieInSummers:
Bwahaha.. I am writing right after the update again. I always seem to catch it. Fear my spooky powers!
The position of a staffer at Starmen.Net seems like the ultimate honor. I mean, who wouldn't want to be one of the glorified people who.. update stuff? But, it also seems like a lot of work. You have to update, I understand, every week no matter what. Even if you died, you would have to get someone to perform a ritual so you could stagger out of the grave, claw your way into someone's house, and access Starmen.Net from their computer to update. So, if I were offered a staffer position I might have to think about it. I'm not big on the whole zombie thing.
I'd probably like to manage Fanart, seeing as I'm an artist myself, but I think it would be nicer to have a more fun job. Mailbag, for instance. :D Or AoE. Those sections seem more enjoyable than the others, which basically include updating stuff.
--Pancake

It’s true...you do have spooky powers! However, due to the supreme popularity of this week’s topic, you were actually the FIFTH person to send in your letters. Yeah, you were all very fast.
It sounds like you’re somebody who really knows what’s going on. You really nailed the pros and the cons. It really is pretty cool to be able to say, “Yeah...I work at Starmen.net...” yet at the same time, the amount of work is painful. However, I’ll have you know the zombie part is reasonably fun. I like getting all zomberfied and walkin’ up to my neighbor and goin’ all “Hey can I update?” and they give me these weird looks and get all “EEEK!! ZOMBIE!”. How rude, you know? Lots of fun. And Mailbag’s the funnerest of them all! ^_^

This Is My Job!
How are ya GiS, I am a first time mailbagger.
If I could run a section I would run the Mailbag. I find reading responses here helps you learn more about the members here. I would like to learn more about them. Of course I could never replace you. ;)
Well that is enough of my rambling. Thank you for reading my little entry.
--Madfish37

Aw, thank you! But why is everybody out to steal my job? ^_^ At least it means people like Mailbag!

Fluke, Mook, Luke...:
I would love to be a staffer here at Starmen.net!
The thing I would staff would be the Flukes section (that is a section right?) I always enjoy myself looking at other people's flukes and making my own set (even though they never get uploaded). Some of them make me laugh so hard I fall apon the ground, others I want to yell at the creators to put more effort into it. Laughing is my hobby, and Flukes are the sport!
--JoeyDK87

Yep, Flukes is the section owned by Wampa. It’s good to know at least some people like Flukes. I think Wampa doubts there are still Fluke fans.

Kermit the Frog Here...
This is really kind of funny about a week ago I was thinking about this very question. About to a year ago I came back to this web page. I was happy to find it still strong as ever. I would love to work at Starmen.net. It would also help me continue to improve on my article writing skills, and it would give me another reason to keep believing that Mother 3 is coming.
I would love to manage the article section. I feel with my experiences writing for my school paper in high school would help me out quite a bit. I also feel that even though it seems the article section has problems with amount of content it receives, I have a few good ideas that could change that. I think if more people were interested in the content of the articles more people would write articles. One of my ideas is an article that I would write once a week. I would interview a different staffer or great starmen.net contributor (art, fanfic, songs, and anything else cool). I think these articles would interest many of the people who go here. Since the interviews would be about their life here at starmen.net and in the real world if they want. If these interviews did interest people the hope would be that they would write some more articles, which would be awesome. I also feel if the articles section was updated once a week more people would submit articles (I know I would!). Any ways I either hope the articles section is updated soon, or Super Buddha makes another stellar appearance. This was an awesome question! Keep up the good work man.
--carryabigbat

Heh, sounds like you’ve already got your résumé. Actually, that sounds like a really good idea (the staffer interviews). For some reason, the people of Sm.Net have an overwhelming interest in staffers. So, I’m sure they’d love to hear about them and about how they’re actual people. I know I’d read.

Gio Needs A 401K Plan
Would I like to be a staffer? That's a difficult question. On one hand, I get to claim to have worked on the biggest Earthbound site on the Web. But, on the other hand, if I miss one update by more than a day, other people start getting antsy and claim that I'm dead, unless I make that a habit. Then there's the deal about content, either by self creation or submissions. For some sections, like Mailbag, no submissions means no updatability. Yet, other sections are a mix of the two, like Fanfics or Flukes, and others still are practically impossible to update frequently because only a certain amount of content can be useful, such as the game sections. It truly is a decision that shouldn't be made lightly. But, like any other "real" paid job, staffing here has a pretty good benefit to hassle ratio. So I think I'd go for it, and if I had my first pick, I'd work for flukes, since I've submitted a few, and it seems to rarely be updated nowadays. It seems like it could use a more frequent update schedule.
--Drakenul

Yep, I’m submission-dependant. And I’m proud to say I’ve got more than enough to keep me going. Working here definitely has benefits, but number one on the list has to be the free hosting space. That and the people calling you Sir or His Majesty or Your Honor or junk like that. ~GiS

All Hail ScottyDog
My dream job here at SM.net would be to be a moderator. I have recently applied for the position at the Anime/RPG board, and I'm praying that I get the position. It would make me the happiest little Scotty on Earth.
So, what's so great about being a moderator, anyway? Well, the first thing that comes to mind here is that you get to play God to all of the little forum-goers. It's your decision what belongs where, and you have magic tools (lock, move, and delete) that bring justice to the forums. Also, you are respected. Unless you do something really stupid, you won't be linked to Tomato's "No" page anytime soon. I also think that if I ever become a moderator, I'll get this warm, fuzzy feeling every time I go to my board. Still, it's not like being a moderator is all fun and games; it DOES require actual work.
Still, it's not like being a moderator is all fun and games; it DOES require actual work. You have to be at your board every day, and judging topics faster than a pig in a tub of slop. You also have to constantly crack the proverbial whip at newbies, which I imagine can get quite annoying. There's also the fact that newbies will yell at you "WTF F00l WHY DID YOU LOCK0RZ MY T0P1C I WILL KILL J00 WITH MY VELCRO" and the nagging requests for badges. Still, this is something I could grin and bear, if I got to be a mod.
So, even though you get flamed by disrespectful newbies and might lose a few nights of sleep yelling at them, when it comes down to the people here that obey the rules and are well respected, moderating a board would be the greatest position ever.
Hoping he gets the Moderator position at the Anime/RPG Board,
--ScottyDog

Wow, I am impressed with your determination. Surely you would do an excellent job as a moderator. I recommend you! You shouldn’t get that many morons at the Anime forum, so you shouldn’t get much WTF from people. Just remember, have fun, keep the boards happy, and don’t go on fun locking sprees. Much.

Well, honestly a month ago I really wanted mailbag :O! Oh well, if CERTAIN people keep their promises *coughGUYINSUMMERScough* maybe I'll get to be a co-responder. Heh, just playin'.
I'm glad you got the job though. Your the type of reg at sm.net who everyone likes, so it's fun for people to mail you.
Actually, I'd really truly want to do articles. I can submit quality work there, and all that. I need to really perfect my html/php skills stuff, but i could always bother you for that kind of stuff. ;D
Peace.

Oops.
^_^ Nah, actually I’m making sure you’ll get your chance in the future. Until then, why don’t you take EBFan2000’s job? We need a bleeping Articles staffer. For that matter, we’d quite like to know where our old Articles person is. And don’t worry, I had to bug plenty of people to get the PHP down myself. I’m sure you’d do a great job, since you’re such a well-known l33t person. That, and you represent the fact that not all new people are idiots. Yay! In event, I have no doubt that you’ll be on the staff someday. Then we can have bump wars on the main page!

Conclusion
Holy schmoo! That was unbelievable!! I had a feeling that a topic about staffers would be popular, but I got 40 replies!! That’s great! That’s gotta’ be a new Sm.Net Mailbag Record! I don’t think we’ll ever be able to top that. But why don’t you go prove me wrong! Yep, you know what you doing. Just head up to the top of this page and pour yourself a nice hot cup of Mailbag!
We had a lot of new Mailbaggers this week. However, we got no letter from Grampa. We also got a great deal of what were practically résumés this week, which was kinda’ cool. I was shocked at the number of people who wanted my job, however. It makes me a little nervous, ‘cuz Tomato would have no problem firing me since there’d be so many replacements. But in any event he has no reason to...wtf pies. My connection just died! Um...yeah...I don’t know when you’ll get this update then...but great job, keep up the good work, and sign me up for a new ISP. Until then, later!
