What did you think of the Halloween Funfest?

Letter of the Week:

Hey GiS!

I've gone through numerous stages of enthusiasm for the funfest.

At the beginning of the month, I was ecstatic. You see, I wasn't here for any of the other Funfests and people had always spoken about them fondly. I was excited to participate in one of the most beloved sm.net traditions.

By the middle of the month, I had lost all enthusiasm entirely. I was pretty busy with stuff at school and work, ect. so the funfest had been pushed into the back of my mind and the beginnings of my entry had been pushed into the back of my computer files.

Now, at the end of the month, I started to feel bad for not participating. I knew I'd regret it if I didn't submit something, so I finished my unfinished product and had a lot of fun with that. Then, tonight (Halloween) I had an idea that wouldn't go away, so I quickly made my second creation only HOURS before the deadline.

Do I think I'll win? I really truley don't know. Though I am extremely proud of my entries The category I submitted to (literature) has some very good submissions that'll be hard to compete with. All in all, I'm happy that I participated.

Anyway, I'm rambling so I better end this letter. See ya next week, GiS!

--PappyCat

Congrats on writing a Letter of the Week!
I hafta' tell you, though. Picking the Letter of the Week this week was murder. It all came down to you and Pancake. It was so hard for me to decide, I had to ask Mr. Washington. After having one quarter stolen by my sister, he decided that YOU WIN!

I was actually disappointed in myself this Funfest. I didn't really get into it much. But when I finally decided to start looking at the entries, I was blown away. Your letter regarding an anti-Halloween petition was quite entertaining, and talent was embedded in your poemy poem. Of cousre there is talent everywhere in the Funfest, of which I am always amazed. ...I'd make this response longer, but then I too would be rambling. Yay for you and thanks for Mailbagging, and...stuff.

ALMOST Letter of the Week:

The 2002 Funfest has been my first one, and I have to say it's aptly named. It's the most fun contest I've ever participated in! Aside from the creativity it fabricates in you, it is great to see everyone else's ideas. I loved waiting everyday for Eggy's magical little update boxes and going to see what was new that day. Not to mention the coolness of being recognized by your own entry. I was really surprised that people even looked at mine, so it made me so happy to hear that I did a good job and whatnot.

I think it's really unlikely that I'll win any category, though, with all the awesome competition. Goosezilla's entry kinda wiped out all of us who entered fanart. I mean, that entry was amazing. But all the fanart was great. Saturn Storm and emilio have very unique styles that make their art fun to look at, and I like Pikachan's work too. The written entries I enjoyed, and most of them were either pretty funny or creepy.

I was on Deviantart the other day, and saw someone upload a funfest entry and I thought that was really cool. It's strange how EarthBound, seeing as its not popular, basically has a headquarters here at Starmen.Net. Meet any EarthBound lover on the net, and they're sure to know about Starmen.Net. I just brought that up 'cause it was interesting and I notice that a lot.

The Funfest was great, and it's kind of a letdown that it has to end. I hope there's a holiday funfest this year..

(Grr, I submitted two letters again >>; See, I got distracted after a minute by that little BOO! button and I just HAD to press it, to see what it would do.. I was kind of thinking it might make a screaming face come up, like in those pictures where they make you look for a ghost. But uh.. it didn't o.o; Sorry! ^_^;;;; Curiosity killed the cat.)

--Pancake

Yay it's Pancake! And her letter is awesome! So awesome that it almost won! Unfortunately, our first Pres would not have it so. Make sure you try again next week!

Oh, and don't worry. I must have tricked at least 10 people into double-submitting with my BOO! button. ^_^ I'd also like to take this time to apologize. You see, updating at midnight has this funny effect - you're way too tired to reply properly to the last letter to which you reply. Except since I'm not using your letter last, this probably makes no sense. In fact everything I'm saying probably makes no sense. Ooo, a cheesecake. I'm spinning! *thud*

~GiS, who is quite tired.

Dang Roadblocks

I'm highly pleased with the Halloween funfest. Not only is the fluke:other ratio lower, but we even got some quality flukes too. Some of the art (like the piece submitted by the always incredible AK) is some of the best I've seen in a funfest and the best thing? It's not just a big inside joke-fest like last year's Christmas funfest was.

--Jim

It's a shame that flukes have gone from art to annoyance, but I suppose that their ease of production dooms them for the label. Anyone can make a fluke, that's the problem. This is why to make a fluke that's actually funny is something that never happens - there are so many not-funny flukes to compare to. The last fluke I can remember laughing at was one in which Ness encountered roadblocks in Giygas's chamber. Unfortunatley, I forget who made this fluke, but kudos to them.

~GiS

I Wear You

Put it like this, it would be hilarious to see a funfest put up, and then see that no-one participates! Boy would your face be red! But what happened here was people from all over the globe... I think.. put in their entries and really let rip! The thing with funfests is that they give you some kind of idea for a fluke/fanfic/poem, but before the funfests ( the uneventful September month to be precise) people have no idea what to fluke or fancficimacate ( Real word). I also noticed that people who you may associate as a world class fluke machine (coughcough*me*cough) actually try out some music or a fanfic. Then, when it all finishes, the losers and heros are parted, and several people get a sticker. Heck, you might create your own category because your work is so original.. I think it becomes more fun when you enter something, like me, and you laugh at all the pathetic entries that cannot compare to yours! Winning is good too.

Hallowe'en funfest is an early call for people to warm up for the Christmas funfest, which is a month away, and then that happens, butthen.. silence.. the months fly past.. until.. October!Better cut them pumpkins!

--Hawian Shirts

I agree, the Funfest is a lot more fun when you actually enter. ...which is probably why I wasn't in to it as much this year. But I can't wait for the Holiday Funfest...I'm going to enter the crap out of it! ...if I'm not too engrossed in Metroid Prime, that is. I've already purchased the bunker, steel doors, sleeping pills and year's worth of food in preparation for that game.

Well, there's a reason that the Halloween Funfest and Holiday Funfest are so close. They have the best material. I mean, can you really envision an Arbor Day Funfest?

~GiS

Boo! I Scare You!

What do I think of this funfest? Hard to say. I only took the time to see maybe three entries (one being SimonBob's, which was cool). No offense to any of the other entrants. I just have my own funfest entry to do. It's a story I've been working on since the begining of this month. It would be done by now, but work = time theif. Most of the story was written in school, like in Algebra. Who needs Algebra, I mean really? Anyway, it should be done soon. Halloween is coing too fast, though. It was all written on paper, which means I'll have to take time to type it too. Well, some of it. I already hired someone to type the first 40 pages (20 pages front and back, written) for me. It's a long story. Both the actual story and the story behind it, I mean. I hope you all enjoy it when/if I can get it done before Halloween!

--The Losar

What a coincidence. SimonBob's entry was the third one I bothered to look at too. Except once I saw everybody referencing to entries in Mailbag I was suddenly pressured to look at all of them. Personally, I I laughed at SimonBob's entry - mostly because I was really tense after staring at Ness's room waiting for something to scare the crap outta' me.

~GiS

Funfests Are Festy

Alright let's see The Funfest has had great entries this year. It had some bad ones too, but I guess everyone wants a chance. There were a lot of insane cultist jokes, but I was just fine with that 'cuase they're my favorite enmies.

Overall Funfest was pretty good, and lots of fun to see other people's entries, but I couldn't help but think someone could have sent in something better. Maybe it should have been me...or maybe it should have been you. If you personally think that you could really do a better job, redeem yourself By submitting again. But you don't have to.

Think of it this way. If everyone DIDN'T try to be the best for funfest...it wouldn't fun...or fest. So there would be no reason to have it. AND NO ONE WANTS THAT.

OK, now that you have wasted your life reading my stupid letter, go read the better ones.

--Dr. Jelly Donuts

You think too lowly of yourself. You wrote a good letter.

Redeem myself by submitting again? Well, it's too late for that now. But hopefully I'll come up with something for the holiday funfest.

~GiS

Don't Make Me

The funfest I think is great since there are alot more of all fan made sections and it is updated alot more often then the other sections seem to be. Also GiS don't change the colors to that bright orange. If you are going to change the colors of the text then change it to a dark color that can still be read easily.

--Heero0m

Aw, where's the holiday spirit? It was Halloween! How else could I deck out in the holiday best? Just be glad I didn't change the color like THIS! Hah, you don't like this, do you? DO YOU? WHO'S LAUGHING NOW PUNK? ^_^

Eye Scream

The Funfest? Well, one word describes the majority of it: Fanart. Does Sephy get this much? That I don't know, since I am a really cruddy artist. Anyway, the Funfest was sure Eye Candy. Of course, the Fanfics came in, too, and I guess there were a few other things. I thought most of it was pretty good, even if the tsunami of Fan Art flooded Eggy's home. Oh well.

--Ness's Cousin

I must say, I too was suprised at the amount of Fanart. Or moreso, the amount of quality fanart. Like Goosezilla's, and emilio's. Dang, I loved emilio's! His style is so awesome! But...no Skyday Funfest entry! :( I was hoping she'd take the time to enter. Well, that's okay Skyday. We know how busy you are. But...enter the Holiday Funfest...please? If you can find the time, that is.

(Skyday is my favorite Sm.Net artist. Can you tell?)

~GiS

Rawk On

This years funfest was dissapointing. There were far too many poorly made submissions. Half of the flukes I looked at had nothing to do with Halloween. There weren't very many fanfics, but the ones I read were like this long:_________.
Plus, they were written like a script. Some of the art caught my eye. This site has a lot of good artists.

I'm still not finished my entry, a fanfic that's not written in script form. It's gonna rawk!

Anyway, I think there should be a quality standard for next years funfest.

--Ninten1

Well, there is sort of a quality standard. Eggy rejects the entries that are just so stupid and pointless that they are an embarrasment to the Funfest's good name. However, there are always going to be inferior entries due to the incredible artists we have here at Starmen.net - some things just can't be beaten. Also, all of the entries should be Halloween related, or else Eggy should've nuked them.

~GiS

Welcome to McMailbags

I very much enjoyed Starmen.net's Halloween Funfest this year. It was enjoyable for me to see what everyone else was submitting. I got to submit some things too, but I don't think I stand much of a chance against the other EB fans. A lot (if not everbody) of people don't know me, my name is xfisjmg1, and I got the game Earthbound for Christmas of 1995. It really changed my life. I found out about Starmen.net around 1998 I guess. I never submitted anything or whatnot, so noone ever knew I existed. I think I said something in the message board once... Well, I know I got WAY off the subject, but I just thought you wanted to know. Well, anyway... Uh... thats my letter! Actually, this is the first letter I have sent in... Okay, I'm done now.

-xfisjmg1

Hey, I've heard of you. Mostly 'cuz with a name starting with x, you were almost always the last person in Eggy's list of Funfest updates. In any event, welcome to Mailbag! I hope you enjoy your stay here. Stay away from Grampa. He's grown senile.

YAY Celeb!

Well, ever since, well, last year, I wanted to do it. So anyways, once I saw Tomato asking for help, I stalled a little because it said "Needed: Good staffers". But after a few days, the post was still up, so I E-Mailed him. So I was all set up and ready to go, until I heard Mato say "I hope you have a decent connection" and I was afraid my 56k wouldn't do the job. :( Luckily it's held through, set up was even easier than I expected.

I know I didn't pull it off as well as Aquas (No one really can), but it had it's moments. At least I updated every 1-2 days the whole month. It was fun talking to all the people I did while running Funfest and getting the privilege to see all the neat entries sent to me. You might think it’d be a pain to sit down and do all this every other night, but really, I enjoyed it. I’ve also noticed (Now that I look back at my submissions from last year) That I’ve come a long way! Please take those down! Ahh.. just kidding, although they are kind of humiliating.

There were a ton of people who didn't follow directions, which got kind of frustrating after a while. The other frustration was not getting a triple post (unless I land one this week), which'd be pretty cool. Well, the Funfest Results should be out soon, so be looking around for that. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

--Eggy

OMG OMG OMG! It's the man of the hour! It's EGGY! Let's tear off his arms and auction them on e-Bay!

Well, Eggy, who would've thought you'd go this far. I remember seeing Tomato's want ad and saying "Uh, no." But you didn't say "Uh, no." You didn't go lazy. You fought the good fight! You nailed the elusive quadruple update! You get a Sm.Net mousepad! YOU RULE!

~GiS

I Eat Pumpkin

The Halloween Funfest was great. I like reading the different entries. The Hungry Pumpkin rocks! When you really think about it, it's really great so many people here are willing to contribute to the enjoyment of others. I'm glad so many people can use their talents so that others may laugh. Too bad I don't have those sort of talents. I didn't submit(though now I wish I had, even though it probably would stink, and I would be laughed at.). Well, It's only the 30th, I could still submit, but I don't have time. Wait, what am I saying? Of course I'll submit! I'll go now!

Looking forward to Halloween Funfest 2003!

--EBKid

Yay for the Funfest! My only disappointment was that I didn't get scared. Okay, maybe a little by SimonBob's. It's probably because I didn't read any of the scary fanfics.

Heh, EBKid, your entry suprised me at the end. I was expecting something like "but it didn't work and they all died the end", but the moral was rather touching.

~GiS

I'm Your #1 Fan!

Halloween Funfests, or all funfests for that matter, really dont strike a beat with me.

I enjoy looking at fan's submitted projcts, drawings, etc..but I really dont think Id submit myself. I probably would though, that is if I had much more time which I do not.

On a side note-me, your most loyal mailbagger's letter was not posted last week, this makes me sad. Also, if you realy got 40 letters and only posted ten of them...how do you expect the same people to write in again if they arent going to be posted. Happy Halloween!

--Psionic Brawler

Oh really? You're my #1 most loyal Mailbagger? I dunno, PappyCat and Pancake just might want to speak with you. Heero0m, carryabigbat, SimonBob and Hawain Shirts are shaping up to be quite the Mailbaggers themselves!

Heh, alright, a straight answer. First of all, I always use between 12 and 16 entries, unless I get so many that I have to use more like 17 or 18. I do this for four reasons. One, if I used every entry, I'd get some real crap in here. Not everybody submits entries as good as the ones you see in your weekly Mailbag. Two, I need to make room for new Mailbaggers. Getting your very first letter rejected to make room for someone who always gets theirs used can be very disappointing. Three, the element of suprise. (Ooo! Ooo! Did he use my letter??). Four, I have a life. As much as I am comitted to Starmen.net, I do Mailbag 'cuz I want to. I do not want to sit here replying to 40 messages. (Yes, EBounding used to reply to all of his messages. That's 'cuz on some weeks, he only got four or five.) But I of course appreciate your continued support to Mailbag, and hope you keep it up!

~GiS

Pants Are Worth More

I thought the Halloween Funfest was simply superb, especially the part where we all got together and guzzled Robitussin by the gallons... aIEEEE! THESE aren't my crayons!!!

I leave you with the following authentic quote:

>Jamie_M< polentah will you sell me your pants for $10

--The Artist Formerly Known as CPTCrunch

I would somehow not be suprised if this quote was uttered shortly after SimonBob claimed his Funfest entry would scare the pants off of us.

Then again, pants are a rather hot discussion topic in many channels.

Conclusion

You did it? No forking way! You did it! You broke 40 again! You guys are the greatest! This week was also the hardest week for chosing the Letter of the Week. PappyCat and Pancake came so ridiculously close that the only fair way to choose was via coin toss. Maybe next time, Pancake. Now, next week's topic isn't as easy to answer, so I don't expect anything like 40 entries. But let's try to make 30 our new Mailbag standard! Good luck! Until next week, everybody.
