Prologue - Page 7: Suzannah and Johnny

kenisu - #07
Here, we get to meet three of my original characters: George and Maria's son, Johnny (I guess if I had to give him an age, I'd say about five), Maria's sister Suzannah, and James, who was mentioned on Page 3.
I knew that since George and Maria had a legacy that HAD to have been laid down BEFORE the abduction, then they must have had a child that had been perhaps overlooked in the kidnapping. To emphasize this, I gave them a son, designed him the way I draw Ninten (just with brown hair and newsie-style clothes), and I made it so that during the abduction, he had been out visiting his aunt Suzannah. Also, note the continued use of British dialect: Johnny refers to his mother as "mum".
At first I wanted the next page after the George-and-Maria scream and the shattering-of-the-eyeglasses to be where Suzannah brings Johnny home, to find the house completely abandoned. Instead, I realized there would need to be some more introduction to these characters, and maybe some interaction with others before they discovered the awful truth. That's how James became more than just a fleeting mention made by George. So, I threw in some more character establishment, and the "Big Discovery" was shifted to Page 8.
I made James to resemble the typical old farmer, jaded by the "young whipper-snappers these days", and I gave him a corn field. Corn fields are great if you want to write something scary. Also, there's a little nuance which I don't think was made clear enough: James' home is the 1906 equivalent of the house in 1988 of the fat guy who says his house was torn apart by a poltergeist.

I think I might have been hungry when I wrote that "appetizer" line of Ninten's. Speaking of food, the orange-and-tan coloring on the dollhouse on the very bottom of the page makes me hungry for a Peanut Cheese Bar. BOING!

I like the unintended effect I created in the background of the "Bad Enough Dude" panel. Ninten gloats, but very visibly behind him, the black cloud out the window has not yet departed. I didn't even catch the irony until I finished the panel.
Also, I was playing around with the idea of Ninten saying "Shoot... and I thought 'The Brave Little Toaster' was farfetched!" when looking at the destroyed lamp in disgust, but I already wanted the "Bad Enough Dude" line, and I figured working in two whole retro culture references one after the other would just be in bad taste, especially considering that I've already gone over the top with those culture references! There's a couple more I want to throw in before the end of the chapter though, so just... humor me.
And on a much relieved note, this is the last page to feature Ninten's room for a long time! All I can say is... THANK GOODNESS! I was getting so freaking sick of that stupid Garfield poster, and I'm sure everyone else was too.

...My scanner is beginning to severely weird me out, what with how fitful it gets.
Anyway. what shall I say here? Let's start with the first panel - I like to call it the "SMAAAASH!!" panel (get it? Splash panel? Smash panel? Heh heh, heh... aww, never mind). I tried my best to recreate the "SMAAAASH!!" logo directly from the game, but holy crap, I never imagined it would be so difficuly, what with the way the angle curves back what with each progressive letter. I'm not so sure how well it works anyway, because I wanted at least two letter "A"s completely out in the open, and not blocked by Ninten's fat head. Instead I wound up with a couple of them half-hidden. Drat. Oh well, everything else turned out pretty much *exactly* how I had imagined it, and THAT, friends, is a good day! Except Ninten seems to resemble Charlie Brown here, what with the angle I chose for his nose - but MOTHER has a lot of Peanuts references anyway.
I also decided to establish Ninten's asthma here. Also, it looks like Minnie and Mimmie are still playing butt tag :) How long WAS that staircase anyway?!

Anyone should be able to figure out what happens in the next page :) And kudos to whoever can guess where I got the phrase "awww, peas!"
