Caution – It is possible that certain scenes in this game
are shocking to an unwarned public. Or maybe not…

Hello! Posting on behalf of Mortis Ghost and his team “Unproductive Fun Time”, I present you the creepy-weird, RPGmaker 2003-created game “OFF”!

Originally in French with only a handful of English resources, a part of the Reconstructed Game Team (including myself) have spent their summer break translating this gem to English to make it available to a wider public.

In “OFF” you take control of a mysterious person called “The Batter”, who is described to be on an important mission. The Batter, and yourself as his controller, are dropped off in zone 0, the first of 4 zones in a perplexing, unknown world about which you slowly find out more and more in the process of the game.

“OFF” has been praised and known as an insider’s tip among French gamers for its strong story, great characters and incredible atmosphere. Although a couple of bugfixes were necessary to enable the game to work more smoothly, I strongly agree with these opinions.

But without further ado, have some screenshots and info!

THE BATTER

The mysterious, taciturn hero of this game appears as a man in a baseball batter’s attire and equipment. He has been assigned to a sacred, righteous mission, and only you, the player, can make him accomplish it.

THE JUDGE

This Cheshire cat-like feline and sole inhabitant of zone 0 talks and acts in a sickeningly overblown, Oxford-professor like manner, and puts high interest and hopes into the Batter’s and your own mission, repeatedly lending you his helping paw and cryptic advice.

ZACHARIE

The one and only “traditional items merchant” of this game, the masked man Zacharie, uses many opportunities to taunt you and the Batter throughout your mission while also aiding you in the form of advice and useful items, repeatedly breaking the fourth-wall to pieces in the process. Aside from that, he’s friendly and not that bad of a guy for a video game character.

About the translation; though it’s now out of Beta it’s still possible that it contains a few bugs, typos or larger mistakes (since English isn’t my mother tongue and I only had help from a native speaker in part). If you find any glaring mistakes, post about them in this thread or send me a PM.

Please do not post any spoiler and/or endgame content outside of a spoiler tag. This game is best enjoyed spoiler-free. If you find bugs or mistakes at important plot points, I’d appreciate you telling me by PM ONLY, for the sake of others’ experience.

Special thanks to: My french father, grandmother and Peudleuduz for additional help with extraordinary vocabulary, zchr for creating a Mac wrapper and hosting universally functional download links for the translation, Mortis Ghost and his team for the creation of this amazing game, again Mortis Ghost for giving me the permission and encouraging me to translate “OFF” and everyone else who did.

NOTE: Before playing, locate the font files inside the “OFF” zip-file and install them to your system; otherwise the game’s text might be difficult to read.

(It is however not recommended to open any folders inside the “OFF” folder iteself (like “Facesets”), as they contain spoiler material.)

NOTE: It is possible to transfer your saves from one version to another by simply locating the “.lsd” files inside your OFF folder. HOWEVER: Saves that were done after a boss will, for one reason or another, NOT WORK ON OTHER VERSIONS THAN THE ONE THEY WERE MADE ON. If you wish to transfer a save where you’ve played until after a boss, continue to the next zone’s red cube before proceeding to transfer.

WINDOWS:

MAC OS:
(Please note that the Mac wrapper used for this version was not created by us, but by zchr. Please contact him if you run into any issues.)

I hope you’ll enjoy this game as much as I enjoyed it before deciding to translate it.

EDIT: For all the music lovers out there, here is OFF’s original soundtrack, extended length! Downlaod AFTER completing the game advised (oh and also the tune “Rainy Day” isn’t inside the RAR folder, but replaced with a renamed copy of “Desperately Safe”, for some reason. Download it separately!) .

EDIT: Additionally, for our French speaking friends, the original, untranslated game. Please note that a few bugs haven’t been fixed in it.

Welcome back, RecDra! I’m a student of French so I will definitely try this out! If I like it I’ll try it again in French!

Well, we never really stopped working on Mother 3.5, we only slowed down a bit. But of course we’ll go high-speed again now!

And oh, that reminds me, I added the link to the original for our French members above. A few bugs haven’t been fixed in that one though; I wouldn’t recommend saving after a boss, for instance.

Great ! I’m French and I’m happy to see OFF translated in english. It’s a very appreciated game in a few community in the “underground” of french video game, and I’m glad that Starmen.net guys are interested by this. Good job, and make OFF a new popular game in America, like EarthBound or Mother 3

@test: My girlfriend from France introduced it to me, and thanks to my knowledge of the language I played through it, highly impressed. There’s hope that this translation will make the game more known outside of french speaking countries. It surely won’t become as big as Yume Nikki or others (knocks on wood), but at least it might bring some sort of experience to a few people, which is all I really wanted to accomplish with this translation!

Apropos translation, ANOTHER UPDATE! Version 1.2; Isaiah found a small part still in French that we overlooked and a few additional minor mistakes have been corrected. New link in the first post!

I know there’s a way to fix the font in RPGMK 2003, I had to get it because it was driving me crazy.

There is a way. A quick Google search should resolve this if you ever feel the need to change it.

If you install the fonts in the game folder, it fixes the annoying blurry font problem. I almost gave up entirely at first because my t’s looked like l’s.

Also… (Don’t read this unless you beat Zone 3)
Holy crap this game got creepy. I mean, it was always creepy, but I just finished "zone 3" and yikes. There's a transition that's incredibly jarring to someone that's been used to how the game worked so far. I figure this is probably close to the end, though.

Edit: Okay, finished. Reveal when you pick the Judge was cool, but as a whole that was kinda depressing. It was a really well made game though, and I loved the soundtrack and freaky trip-outs in the final zone. Also, the Judge is clearly the best character.

@XXStone Naaah, I’ll just stick to advising to install the fonts. I’m not much of a coder.

@handish2000 I'm guessing you meant the Burnt guy in the underground railway? Yes, that was the first time I personally realised the truth behind everything.

Also I agree; he is the best character to me as well. I picked him during my first playthrough too in the end, because I couldn't handle the other option.

A question to you though, have you collected the five elements?

sprite handish2000

  • fangamerHCP
  • dragon

  • EarthBound Central

Yeah, I found those. I'm surprised nothing ever asked me for them... I was definitely expecting one of the final rooms to. The zone 0 one was pretty tough though, and so was 3 with the nasty random enemies.

I did go back and take the original choice just to see what would happen, but I did prefer the Judge ending. Seeing the "true form" of a terrible werewolf-raptor beast was really well done. Other parts that stuck out to me as cool were the scribbled hallway (should've been more of these!) and the comic book interlude. I didn't really suspect everything until the "white-out" happened, despite knowing there was more to it than what I was seeing.

My only big complaint, though, was that it kinda contradicted itself and never made clear… what was up with the ghosts in the first place. Obviously, they weren't part of the happy world - not only that, but in zone 1, Dedan the tall guy was a huge jerk. It's hard to swallow that he _shouldn't_ have been put down, despite doing a 180 in the final area. I wanted to chalk that up to altered perception, but there certainly wasn't any perception issue with Hugo. Poor Hugo. :/

Eggh, that’s a lot of spoiler text. Don’t read it if you haven’t finished the game, people. In any case, despite those things, I had a good time with this and suggest more people to play it! Also, one of the Day items (I don’t remember which) had an untranslated description. Might wanna check that.

@handish Generally speaking, a lot can be interpreted into this game. I would keep typing here, but really, that’d be too many spoilers; I’ll send you per PM.

About the elements, I think you either forgot one or didn't do what's necessary for them to work. I'll write you in the PM what you have to do to make a use of them.

wow thoroughly impressed with this so far, really atmospheric and somewhat film noirey

just finished this game, really reminded me of early david lynch stuff and reminded me alot of some of the cartoons that david firth has done! Who did this soundtrack btw? Was really impressed by it, very Ulver or Akira yamaoka.

…I’m surprised nobody’s commented on the main battle song yet (or at least, the battle theme that plays the most up to zone 3; I can’t testify for anything past that because I’m stuck at the door in the factory that you need a specific name to go through, but it says something about thugs if you get it wrong ). I don’t know how to describe it….it just really seems to fit the theme of the game. And it’s really, really catchy; I keep catching myself trying to hum/sing/whistle/drum it every once in a while.

I’m a proud of admin of EarthBound Wiki;
if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me. :)

sprite 8mike8

Yeah I know what you mean man, I think it’s a remix of some old swing tune. If you need help with that bit btw I got stuck there for a while too, but when you go to the input screen for entering the code, take specific note of the shape of the silouetted character also featured on the screen!

Oh, Pepper Steak? Nope, it’s no remix, but it uses some sound fonts ripped from some Ragtime tunes, I think! …I think. Frankly, I’m not sure about what it is exactly either, but it certainly is no remix.

Speaking of the soundtrack, the whole thing has been published by Alias Conrad Coldwood in a .RAR file, with extended versions of most songs within!

Here it is! I’ll add the link to the first post too; But please note that these songs are spoiler-filled, and, generally speaking, it’s ill-advised to download the OST before completing the game.

EDIT: Nevermind, I fixed the bug with the image file! Everything will be fine in the next version.

Alright people,

UPDATE TIME!

Version 1.3 is out!!

The bug with the “missing” image should be fixed now. This fix is the only one I know, so if the problem persists still I won’t be able to do much. I tested it here and it worked fine, though.

The last line in French handish pointed out earlier has been translated as well!

If no more typos or bugs turn up this should be pretty much the last update of this game’s English translation. Meanwhile, I’ll be busy with school, Mother 3.5 and a German translation.

sprite 8mike8

Awesome! thanks alot

sprite Le Shad

Thanks a lot for translating this game. As a French, I was pained to be unable to share it with English-speaking friends, and it is now possible thanks to you. Cheers.

There are some rare translation errors here and there, I believe, but nothing too shocking. I’ve played the game up until the beginning of zone 2, and so far the translation is quite accurate and faithful to the original version. I’ll probably send a PM if I find an error that really ought to be corrected, but I don’t think I’ll need to do so.

UPDATE TIME.

This SHOULD be the final version of the game, unless I manage to find a way to correct the French messages that seem to be implemented in RM2003’s script. What I DID manage to correct thanks to a PM by Le Shad are a few misplaced events, typos and grammar mistakes and a missing line!

The download link has been updated; Enjoy!

I’ve found the source of the bug:

Nope, that’s not the case in the source file I have here; it’s not misnamed. However I now know a possible reason for it…

Perhaps your version of Windows 7 doesn’t register letters with accents like á, à, é etc. in file names. 11février is the only file in the source with one of these letters. I find this pretty strange since I wasn’t aware of the fact that some systems can’t do that, but it’s the only logical conclusion.

That way I got a fix for this bug, though (remove accent letters like that and replace them in filenames, as well as register these changes in the game)! Thanks for pointing that out!

sprite EmbiggenedJ

I fixed it myself by changing the file’s name to the correct one. I needed to use Character Map to get the correct character, but it worked.

Question about whether I screwed myself out of one of the endings:

I got a certain item in Zone 3 and gave it to someone (an act which is optional), but in The Room, that item was mentioned. Is it needed for at least one of the possible endings?

sprite yartrebo

I’m playing OFF on Windows 7, and the only issue I’ve had is the font issue (which I resolved by installing the font).

PS: If it’s of any importance, I’m playing the French version.

After I found out that I had downloaded this (awesome) game while I was browsing my molded files, I finally played it from start to end – and because I wasn’t with internet to read this topic and I couldn’t translate the FAQ from the readme, to know what to do about the unintelligible text that appears if you don’t install the font, I had to though it out.

But I still managed to read the dialog just fine.

I must say that I appreciated this game much more that I expected. It has the exact amount of a creepiness, weirdness and simplicity combo that I’d like in a video game – sometimes it even reminded me of Yume Nikki. I also liked a lot The Batter; always cold and dead serious, with fear of nothing and ready to do what has to be done.

The spotlight, however, goes to the story. Albeit short, it was definitely an experience, comparable also its dialog to the Mother games.

…C’est magnifique ! :b

Just beat the game, amazing experience! Thanks for translating it! Got a really annoying bug, at the rooms before area 3 boss my charcter got stuck moving at a snail after stepping off the last train, like slow speed and it stuck for the rest of the game. A couple of questions:
What is the meat that zach sells in the final area for 5000 for?
How do I get the secret 3rd ending?
Is there any way for me to fix this walking bug?

sprite RoeCocoa

I love this game. Downloaded it earlier this week and beat it twice. Video games don’t usually affect me emotionally, but I honestly felt bad about several of the late boss fights and had trouble sleeping because of the white world. Very creative presentation; excellent use of sound.

The only thing I haven’t gotten is the third ending. I have Grand Finale, Grand Brachial and Grand Chocolatier, but I don’t even know where to look for the other prerequisites. Can I still get them after clearing all of the zones up to the final red cube, or do I need to start over?

jkd003: I haven’t experienced the same bug, but I did get some movement glitches once in Zone 2. Have you tried saving, exiting all the way out and then running the game again? Your first and second questions are related to my question, so I really hope somebody can answer them.

Well, that’s what I gathered from looking at spoilers. It _seems_ like you unlock something by collecting special items representing the five elements. I have the items for Sugar, Meat, and Smoke, but I'm missing the ones for Plastic and Metal, and I have no idea how to get them.

zaratustra

Sugar/Grand Chocolatier is accessible from a newly appeared staircase in Zone 0.

Plastic, metal and smoke are each hidden at the very end of Zones 1, 2 and 3 once they’ve been purified. (one is at the back of Dedan’s fort and requires a pedalo to get to, one is in THE RESIDENTIAL AREA THANKS ROECOCOA and one is in a completely white area where Enoch was: you have to walk diagonally to find it)

Meat is purchasable from the last store.

Aries Card gives you an extra scene after the Judge ending finishes.

sprite RoeCocoa

Thank you, zaratustra! Everything was exactly as described, except the Zone 2 item was actually in the residential area. You get in through the mall, and in one of the houses you find the code to the one door you couldn't open earlier.

sprite Nhouhr

I was wondering if I could get a hint about Zone 2… I've gotten to the theme park and opened Zachary's room, I'm assuming there's nothing else to do there? I don't know if the blocked areas ever get unblocked(upstairs library, residential area). Is that enough information to get a hint, or should I give more...?

sprite Erich

What am I supposed to be doing with Enoch? I get the hint that I’m supposed to flee, but that is not a valid option to the battle. Is this just a fight with a very high HP counter, or am I helplessly whacking away at a boss with maximum health?

@Erich

Flee his first form in his office and the hallways after it and keep moving through the myteriously pure halls, back to the underground tramway; Enoch, as encountered there, is beatable, for he has exhausted himself crawling through the sugar pipes. If you cannot defeat him, try grinding with the Calvary Burnts in Area 4, and be sure to buy enough healing and CP replenishing items from Zachary beforehand. There is a reason why you can’t save after you’ve met Enoch for the fdirst time!

@Nhouhr

Have you won the Balloon game against the Elsen yet? If so, you should have gotten a necktie for a prize; The Blocks in the residential area open for people with a necktie on, as you can gather from talking to the Elsens, all wearing their fancy lil’ black ones. Use it in the area with the blocks and the Batter will put it on.

@JKD I know of this glitch, and I got it too on one of my two computers, however I do not know how to fix it. I tried messing with the event playing when you exit the train, but that only made things too fast.

ALSO a little update: Life has not been kind to me, so the next version, which is going to be a better translation from scratch will take some time. Sorry people <:(

Veav

In the same boat as Erich.
I get that I should flee, but the option is grayed out and inaccessible - no matter how I massage the menus it only lets me Attack and Auto on that fight. Flee just goes BZZT and does nothing. It's basically locked me out of continuing the game.

I don’t remember the fight well, but I remember having the same problem – though I worked out of it somehow. Maybe you can only do so in an specific part of the dialogue, or after you analyze him?

I melted away one warm winter day. But I’ll always remain in your memory.

Veav

oh DUDE I got it. The flee in the far left menu is dysfunctional. But, after selecting attack, your right menu - with attack and technique and item - can scroll down, and there's a "flee", as well as a "rang", whatever that is. And that works. Also, with the same menu scrolling, your circle buddies can use items. I thought they couldn't. The moar you know...

sprite Nhouhr

Thank you very much! Lovely game, by the way, I’m SUPER grateful for this translation!
