A Story Without a Title
I have not been a member of the EarthBound community for as long as many others; I have really only been around in full since late July of this year. At least, the online EarthBound community. But the EarthBound community, I believe, consists of more than just those of us who spend time online, on earthbound.net and other sites about EarthBound. On the contrary, every person who is a fan of EarthBound, Nintendo’s unheralded masterpiece, is a member of the EarthBound Community, whether we know them or not.
In the relatively brief time that I have been around the EarthBound online scene, I have seen a lot of fighting. I have heard accusations that the webmasters of earthbound.net are dictators and are unfair; I have heard accusations that myself and the other forum moderators and #earthbound Ops are unfair and power hungry. Friends, seeking power on an internet community is a dead end road, whether we know about it or are guilty of it or not.
We all seem to have friends and enemies on the EarthBound online scene, and it certainly cannot be disputed that there are some people, even internet people we don’t even really know, that we simply cannot get along with; I would not deny my guilt in this department. What we all need to remind ourselves, however, is that we are all here for the same reason. You are reading this article right now for the same reason as I am writing it, and for the same reason as everyone else who reads it, or reads the newsletter, or reads the forum, or reads lines in #earthbound does. That is because we all share one common thread, and that one thread is EarthBound.
Some of us dislike some others; I am certainly guilty here. Some of us have very different interests from some others, and some of us have very different beliefs and temperament. But friends, we all are fans of one of Nintendo’s greatest RPGs. I fear that we have all lost sight of that. The very reason that I am writing this article is because I sat down and realized that I had lost sight of the simple fact that earthbound.net and all the other sites and chatrooms around are simply gathering and information places about EarthBound. I would hope that from this article, the people who read it get it back together that we are indeed all linked by the one common belief that EarthBound is a wonderful game.
This is not to say that people should be able to do whatever they like, be it swearing, talk of drugs, alcohol, or other illegal activities, or etc. On the contrary, this is to say that all of you people out there who are guilty of such offenses need to remind yourselves that there are many other EarthBound fans out there who should be respected, and do not need nor deserve to be subjected to crude behavior of any kind. And in closing, we EarthBound fans are an elite group; despite all the bickering and fighting, we are indeed one of the most definite and cohesive groups of game fans around, and the time has come for us to strengthen and retain that status before it is too late. I will close with the following statement, which I believe to be the entire theme of earthbound.net and the EarthBound community:
