Hello, and welcome to a brand new Fan Games & Programs rules topic!

Fan Games & Programs is all about software development in homage to or inspired by games we all play and love. Many great games have gotten their start as tributes to the great games of the past, and this is a forum all about just that.

Because of this and some of the great games that have been discussed on these boards, we no longer are requiring that all the games posted here are 100% free fan games. If your project starts out as a fan game but becomes something else, talk about it in your topic. If you want to create a game to become a better developer/artist/designer, this is the forum for you! If you want to get community support through the arduous process of making a game or program, this forum is for you. We just want people to have fun discussing games and software development.

…:::The Golden Rules:::…
Thou shalt stay always on topic.
Thou shalt adhere to the Game Thread Guide.
Thou shalt put pride in your work and respect the work of others.

Rules: General

  1. Do NOT ask for or provide illegal material. This includes commercial ROMs, unauthorized translations of programs, and other pirated software.
  2. Plagiarism is wrong. Do NOT take credit for somebody’s work or use it unless granted permission by the owner/creator, or given for public use.
  3. Keep posts mature and on topic. There shouldn’t be any posts made that do not contribute to the topic in some way. Do NOT insult any users or their work, instead focus on well-thought constructive criticism.
  4. This board is for game discussion, not advertising. This forum is for discussing game projects and game creation. You CAN post about potentially commercial games that you are developing and are relevant to the fan game theme (inspired by an existing game). Do NOT post about games you aren’t working on or games from major studios. We want fan and/or independent developers to be able to use this space to discuss their projects.
  5. Again, New Topics should be ONLY about projects that YOU are working on. If you feel the need to post about a game that a friend is working on, DON’T — have them make an account and do it themselves.

Rules: Topics

  1. What topics ARE allowed here?
    - Sprite art and other game related media.
    - Your fan-game projects.
    - Any discussion about game development.
    - Question concerning game development.
  2. What topics are NOT allowed here?
    - Discussion about large studio commercial games (head to Beyond Fangamer for that)
    - Asking for people to join your project in threads that are not yours (do this in your own project topic)
    - Questions/Projects with little or no substance.
    - Anything not related to indie/fan games in some way.
  3. Look before you post. The sticky topics are there for a reason, don’t ignore them! With the new forum the most important topics are now located ABOVE the board in little tabs. READ ’EM!
  4. Topics should be readable. We can excuse you if English is not your native language but everyone please do your best to write legibly and coherently. Use PARAGRAPHS and HEADINGS, be organized and preview your topic before posting it.
  5. Project topics should have adequate content. Do NOT simply post asking for help or replies to something you haven’t worked on. If you’re looking for help show us that you at least started on something and have plans laid out. Please see the Game Thread Guide for help here.
  6. Question and request topics should have adequate details. We’ll be able to better help you if you can tell us exactly what’s wrong or what you’re in need of rather than posting haphazard.
  7. Avoid bumping old topics. Don’t bump topics over a month old unless it’s your topic and you have an update to post. If it is not your topic, then you need to have something substantial to post that would create discussion. This keeps active project topics at the top of the board so there’s no confusion about what’s in development and what isn’t.
  8. Crowdfunding and Marketing. Crowdfunding, such as kickstarter, patreon, indiegogo, etc, or any other form of asking for financial support or backing for your project, should be run by a board moderator before being posted. Preferably, any project that is asking for funding will have a well-established thread and show substantial progress before doing so. We may ask for funding or marketing efforts to be removed from the boards if they break any other forum rules, if they seem to be pressuring users too much, or we otherwise feel the funding or marketing is not acceptable for Fan Games and Programs. Generally, we want people to be supported for their projects, so just ask and make sure you’re good to go beforehand.
