Nostalgia

Do you remember the initial feeling you got when you first played EarthBound? For me, it was like when I hear a song that really moves me. I got shivers down my back. Somehow, what I remember the most of that occasion is the smell of the air. The window was wide open and it was like the interior of my nose was burning. However, it was more of a pleasant kind of burning sensation. Nowadays, every single time that its cold outside and that the air smells very fresh, I have, only for less than a second, an image from me playing EarthBound when I was a kid. When that happens, I get very nostalgic.

I remember when I was young and I used to go to the video store at least once a week to rent a game. The best time was when the SNES wasn’t even released then. The NES games used to be so fun. I remember renting Zelda 1 over and over, even if my aunt that lived downstairs owned it. It was the good old time. Eventually, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released. I remember this event as an important moment in my childhood. The SNES arrived to my video store along with a few games in 1992 (it was in stores before). It was around the time of the release of Terminator 2, that my mother didn’t want me to see. I remember looking at the box of Zelda 3 for hours. I was impressed at the graphics on the box. On a side note, did you know that The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was the only game that Nintendo released in French? Anyway, I think I was bugging the guy who worked there because I was really there for hours each time I went. I couldn’t decide on which game to rent, there were so many that looked good and so many that I liked! I remember when I got my SNES with Super Mario Kart, a world of new game renting possibilities unveiled before my eyes! It was one of the most beautiful days of my life.

Now, we get to the interesting part. One day in 1995, I go to a video store that I rarely went to because it was a bit more expensive. I tried every single game that my old one had. So, I go there and I find a huge colorful box. What was the name of that game? That’s right, EarthBound. First, I wanted to rent it only because of the payers guide but I had to leave a 10$ deposit in order to take the guide too. At the time, I didn’t quite understand the concept of deposit? I thought that they’d keep my 10$ after I gave the book back. On top of it, I wasn’t very rich so 10$ was a humongous sum of money that I could never get except at my birthday or Christmas. I ended up playing a bit, without understanding exactly what I was doing but there is one thing I must say, the name you character thingy is the most brilliant thing to put in a RPG. It got me to identify with Ness so I couldn’t let the game go. I took the game back the next day. I wasn’t very far, I was right after you killed the Starman Jr. and I always died trying to beat up the Sharks. A few months passed before I rented it again. This time, it was while I was sick and I missed school for a week. I got up to Fourside. I remember playing all day long. My mother couldn’t stop bugging me to make me stop playing for a while. Anyway, the harm was done: I became an EarthBoundaholic.

At that time, I needed to buy EarthBound. It was for sale, used and without the guide, at my video store for 15$. I went to a card store and I sold a 40$ Felix Potvin Special Edition hockey card for 20$. I then ran to the video store to buy the game. I ran so fast that I had problems getting there because of my asthma. However, I succeeded and I became the owner of my very own EarthBound cartridge! I got up to Giygas without the Payers Guide and I really wanted that guide.

One summer, I went to my dados house. EarthBound and my SNES came with me. One day, we went to a flea market and there was an EarthBound game with Payers Guide!!! The guy was really nice and he let me borrow the guide so I could make photocopies. I was happy.

I eventually made the mistake of trading EarthBound to a friend and I started having dreams of me, playing EarthBound. According to Sigmund Frauds theories about caldrons dreams, these dreams are realizations of an unfulfilled desire. Since I was a teenager instead of a child, other factors came complicating the dreams. As you might know, dreams are a way of letting content of your subconscious come out. Since your mind has intense censoring activities, the content comes out in a metaphorical way. That’s why dreams are often so weird. So if you add this factor to my dreams, you can guess that they were VERY weird. In other words, they were a mix of the desire of playing EarthBound with symbolization of events that occurred during the days and with thoughts that I repressed. The dreams had to stop.

I would take to use a paragraph to clarify a few things. First, I am not and I have never been crazy. Second, I have never killed someone over a psychopathic rampage of some sort and I don’t plan on doing so in the future or in the present. In other words, my dreams were weird but sane.
