Now and Then

I guess this would be my first article ever for Starmen.net. I do work for a site already, and that is Gamecube Cafe. I recently joined the site forums and stuff a few days ago. And the good part about that these people are actually quite intelligent. Sure, GCC are smart people, but idiots plague our chat and forums. Ahem, lets get to my story about Earthbound.

It all started around 1999. I was reading codes for a recent release for the Nintendo 64 called Super Smash Brothers. The secret characters for the game seemed obvious enough. Luigi, Jigglypuff...and Ness. First, I was like "Who the heck is Ness? I don’t know any Ness." I then read that he was from a game series entitled Earthbound. With my curiosity at a high, I decided to try the game out. What I didn’t know was I was about to play one of the most unique RPG's ever.

Although I have yet to beat the game, I love it. The story seems familiar, but the tasks you do sure aren’t. I mean, saving a band from a wicked theater owner? I’ve never done such a thing. Visiting a land full of odd little creatures that go "BOING"? I was darn impressed by this game and its characters. I decided to do a little more research. I soon learned that there were 3 Earthbound games in the series. I was excited, because one of them was on its way here. Unfortunately, I was soon going to be disappointed.

As most of you know, Nintendo sadly pulled the plug on the Mother sequel that was to be released for the N64. Shocked, and disappointed, I decided to try the original Mother. You know, the one for NES. Although the characters and environments seemed the same, I decided that I would try to beat the SNES Earthbound instead of the first one. I’m still sort of stuck on Earthbound. I hope to get unstuck soon enough.

I first saw Starmen.net a few years ago. I quickly signed the petition and left the site. I didn’t see any of the forums or chat rooms, because I didn’t feel like it. A few years later, I decided to look around the site. This site is one of the best Earthbound sites on the net. Full, comprehensive coverage of all 3 games are here. It’s also fairly easy to navigate. That’s what I like in a site. I soon added it to my favorites, and I joined the forums.

So now that I’m a regular in Starmen.net, I guess I can say that Earthbound is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Great story, memorable music, a sense of humor- Its all in there. I do hope that one day, we will see Ness ride again onto our TV screens. Who knows, maybe one day he will. Even if it hasn’t been a successful RPG in sales, Earthbound is definitely one of the all time greats. And I hope I will be able to enjoy more of this franchise in the future.
