Ness in Super Smash Bros.

Ness is possibly the best character in Earthbound (if you consider his end-game stats, only), and a truly unbeatable (if used right) character also in Super Smash Brothers. I suggest though, that you play him every day, as he is a Pro Character (ie: a character you have to be very skilled to use).

PLUSes:

+ He is relatively strong, and fast.
+ Can regen health, if you're fast.

MINUSes:

- He is a weak character (ie: He can't take a lot of damage on a low handicap, to knock him off the edge).
- He pretty much can only take care of one character at a time... His PK Fire doesn't have much range, and isn't meant to travel the battle- field. His PK Thunder can, but opposing teammates can hit you while you're doing this.

First off, to get Ness in this addictive game, you have to beat the game on Normal Difficulty, with 3 for stock set in the beginning, and do not die during the entire game.

Hard eh?... Well, I only died ONCE, and still got Ness, which was during the last battle with the Master Hand. So, supposedly, you get and extra life, if you play well.

EASY & CHEAP TRICK TO GET NESS: Get Luigi, and pretty much, only throw the enemy (excluding the Master Hand. You'll need to be lucky). I select Luigi for this task because he's strong, fast, and JUST TALL enough to throw every character in the game. Pikachu (another hard character to beat when used wisely) is not strong enough, although fast.

Anyways, here are Ness's moves, if you weren't addicted to learning about him already.. :)

And very disrupting to a few EB players, Ness's special moves he does NOT learn in EarthBound...

B --> PK Fire --> He says it --> It shoots a little red/yellow bolt at a direction, and causes the character to relatively be stuck in place while they are toasted. :)

B and UP --> PK Thunder --> He says it --> It shoots a little purple ball with a line trail (the thunder) out of Ness, which you control. This is very good to use on those annoying characters who can fly, aka Kirby and Jigglypuff. The trick is to use a technique later mentioned, and when they have a high enough , they can be stunned and be unable to fly back. Ness is stunned while doing this, don't do it near any opponents, or else they'll get you while you're doing this. Very risky.

B and DOWN --> Psi Magnet (called Psychic Magnet in the game) --> He does not say it --> It takes a few seconds to pull off, and doesn't work against some attacks, I've tried it against Link's boomerang. No go...

NON special moves

A Punch, punch, kick (in that order of pressing)
A and a little tap in a direction--- Hard kick
A and a tap in a direction-- Ness pulls his bat out and smacks enemy. Strong
Joystick is pointing up, but Ness is not jumping, and A-- "Pushes" air above him (in case an enemy comes down on him).
A and a Tapped UP-- Ness pulls out a Yo-yo, and swings it in an upward arc, catching it behind his back (good for "Star Exits"...)
A and down -- Kicks the enemy in direction that was primarily faced. (Note: kicks on the ground, like slides his foot)
A and a tapped DOWN-- Ness pulls out a Yo-yo, and swings it behind, then infront of him, then catches it. This is good for knocking off enemies who are hanging off the edge.

-Normal Character moves

Z or R and not tapping anything-- Shield
Z and/or R and direction of enemy (right next to him)--Throw
Z and/or R while Shielding, and a tap in a left or right direction-- a slide left or right.

Tactics I use with Ness:

1. Ness can pull off a combination of A attacks very fast. So, I essentially would run towards an enemy and do a dash attack, knocking them off their feet. Then, I keep pressing Right and A together. When they reach the air, I press up and A when they come close to me. I usually get Ness to practically "push" the air above him, and he ends up constantly doing this to the enemy every time they come down. When they really start getting up there, I doublejump up to them while they're flying, and do an Up and A attack. This sends them higher, makes them weaker, and sends them closer to a Star Exit.

If this is Kirby or Jigglypuff, when the percent is kinda high (about 125), I let them touch the ground, and press the direction they're in and A, to pull out Ness's bat, and whack them off the field. They will most usually try to fly back, but I constantly use PK Thunder to hit them.

2. I work very hard until the item I get is a BeamSword, as Ness is pretty weak, when you put him against relatively heavy characters. I use pretty much the tactic from above, after I get this.

3. Run. I stay away from them with upmost effort on working to stay away from them, but while doing this, (since Ness is fast), I can get away usually to pull off a PK Thunder. If they get close, I PK Fire. Ness is particuarly weak, so I often have to use this tactic.

4. If I am knocked into the air, I immediately press all the buttons to recover, tap down, and return the enemy's attack with an A and DOWN attack.

Points that demand immediate action:

A. PSI Magnet is a hard skill to master, as it takes important time away from defending time, so you may end up using Ness's shield, because it's faster...

B. Ness needs a lot of space, when the enemies are so strong. If many enemies bunch up on you, doublejump to as far as you can get from them.

C. You need to WORK to master Ness, he is a hard character to use against a team with 2 heavy characters (ie: Donkey Kong and Mario).

D. Ness has a VERY HARD Triplejump. You have to WORK to get it right. The PK Thunder pushes Ness, so you essentially have to use PK Thunder after your doublejump, and send the PK Thunder around to your back or butt, and have it hit you. No damage is taken, and you get back to the platform. This is ESPECIALLY Tricky when you are off- screen.

E. Once again, Ness needs a LOT of space, so stages like Fox's or Link's can be easier to navigate in... Ness can go flying FREQUENTLY, so be careful around heavy characters in other stages!

F. Ness is more of a Team Character... You can fight against 2 relatively hard enemies, possibly 3 weak ones, but if Ness is teamed, the enemy is practically DEAD.

SPOILERS FOR BONUS STAGES...

Ness's Bonus Stage 1.

1. Break target to left with A
2. Jump and break target to upper left.
3. Land on side, and double jump to next target, which you should break.
4. Double jump up through the platform, and go down the little maze. At the end of this maze, PK FIRE (press B alone) that target, which should fall onto another target.
5. Get to the top of the maze, and stand on the top of the wall on the left (which the platform from earlier is connected to), and aim with PK Thunder to go down the long column to the right (you have to move it into the arrow, and keep it moving STRAIGHT down).
6. Double jump from the earlier platform (make sure to start the second when you've reached the apex of the first) onto the platform on the lower left. Doublejump onto the platform above (after breaking the target.)
7. PK Thunder if you want the target above, but also PK Thunder the next target, as using Ness's triplejump is hard to get there, while you could do less work.
8. Go to the platform below again (tap down), and PK thunder the last target inside. YOU WON!!

Ness's Bonus Stage 2

1. Go left onto the first platform, then left onto the normal platform then left again each time, navigating to the respectful platforms. Make sure to just NUDGE, or else you may go too far...
2. Fall off last platform onto either the ramp or the hole. The new platform is reached by Ness's Triplejump, which is to jump, doublejump and then PK Thunder yourself, on your butt..
3. Fall off platform, and go to edge of lower ground. Jump to the next platform, then Doublejump to the platform after that.
4. TRICKY: You have to double jump as far as you can, and when you are near the wall, PK thunder yourself in the back. Doublejump up to the next platform (after you land), then this part is tricky. You have to doublejump through all the moving platforms.. Good luck. When you're on the last, doublejump to the left platform avoiding the bumpers, which if you hit them, you can recover by pressing Z.
5. Fall or jump to the outjutting of the left wall, then triplejump to the platform on the right.
6. TRICKY: You have to have the PK Thunder loop around behind you, hit you in the butt at the RIGHT ANGLE as to send you into the above platform. Yes, the PK THUNDER can go through platforms. My best time is: 40"35.. Have fun! :)

End Spoilers

OVERVIEW: Ness is a teamplayer, as he was in the original EarthBound. He apparently was meant to play with someone else, if against many, because PK Thunder leaves you open, as it isn't fast enough, he is easy to be knocked off on a low handicap, PK Fire has short distance, and PSI Magnet is not fast enough sometimes, when it's important. I suggest that you use Ness as a teamplayer, if you're good, but as a veteran at SSB, mabye by himself... But I would plan to only use Ness on a team...
