Of Gods and Sand. Lots of Sand

“To fight against the invaders, we built this pyramid fortress. However, our efforts were futile, and we lost. Nonetheless, our pyramid was protected by the gods of Scaraba. The invaders will be reborn every millennium and will attack again. Even now, the invaders hide beyond space and time and build their evil stronghold. A place out of time is beyond the Dark, and is even farther beyond the Lost Underworld. The Deep Darkness is shrouded, it is without light. Only one with the Hawk eye can pierce the dark. The Sphinx now watches over everything, waiting for the coming of a truly brave hero.

Dance in front of the Sphinx!”

The hyroglyph states that the Scarabians lost the confrontation they had against "the invaders", but yet somehow, they were repelled. Why would these invaders leave (to be reborn every millenium) when they had won? That is the real question at hand. The answer, and many questions, begin with the Sphinx. Obviously it is more than just a simple man-made structure. The invaders referred to may not even by Giygas' band of minions, because it says that "even now, the invaders hide beyond space and time and build their evil stronghold".

Okay, let's start by analyxing these hyroglyphs, and taking some key points. First of all, the Scarabians lost. Second, the hyroglyph found in the museum in Summers make it sound incredibly like these invaders are in fact from outerspace, though not once does it say that specifically. Third, while this prophecy/page out of a history book does not specifically say the enemy is Giygas, it is quite ironic then that it mentions going through Deep Darkness first, before reaching the Lost Underworld - which is the exact path Ness must travel to reach Giygas. Next, it mentions the Hawk eye - but it makes it sound as if many had this rare item, or perhaps ability, earlier in history because it claims that "the Sphinx now watches over everything", meaning that it didn't in the past. Finally there are the numbers and the instructions to 'Dance in front of the Sphinx".

I'll get right to the point. My theory is that the Sphinx itself is a god, or at least the place where some sort of Scarabian god resides. Perhaps the Hawk eye is the god, and Ness is carrying an immortal being in his pocket. When the Scarabians were defeated in this war with the invaders, it describes the Pyramid as being protected by the gods, and then it suddenly speaks of the invaders as if they've been defeated and are far away. Wait a minute! You caught that didn't you? It says the pyramid is protect by the gods, not the sphinx, so where does it tie into all this? When you leave the Sphinx, you exit through a pyramid. Not a huge one, it's true, but it is a pyramid - and the only accessible one there is. What if the Sphinx in itself is an illusion? Or, instead of an illusion, it is the form taken by a Scarabian god to hide the true entrance to this pyramid?

This theory ties largely into what is written on the hyroglyph. It says that the Sphinx is waiting for a truly brave hero, and obviously Ness was able to enter. He proved that he is brave time and time again in the Sphinx, battling the numerous guardians until he finally reaches the Hawk eye. I have no doubt that the final part of the hyroglyph is instructions to enter the pyramid - but what if someone other than the 'truly brave hero' attempted to enter the Sphinx? Who knows, it may even come alive and consume them, though it may also have grant them entrance as well for the purpose of testing how brave they are. The fact of the matter is that there's something big missing in this picture, circling the Hawk eye, the Sphinx, and the hyroglyph. It would appear that the Hawk eye, or the perhaps the Sphinx was capable of driving out some great evil before - whether that be Giygas or not. If that is true then this item you're toting around in your pocket could have a great deal more power than ever realized, and it's prescence, if even just the 'mark' it left on Ness after taking it, could be crucial to the final outcome of the adventure. Perhaps we shall never fully know what secrets the Sphinx and the ancient Scarabians guard.
