Super Stats in EB - by Mr. Tuvai

Super Stats in EB

I don't know if this kind of thing is common knowledge, but I recall a conversation on the EB.net Message Boards not long ago about using the Rock Candy trick to raise stats to insane levels and, by context, it seemed that no one had gotten any stats quite up to 255, the supposed maximum.

One fine day, while browsing through an Earthbound-related site that shall remain nameless, I found a Game Genie code labelled cryptically, "Character starts Super Strong".

"Gee", wonders I, "How strong is super-strong?".

So I pull out the archaic Game Genie out of a shoebox in my closet, blow off a puff of dust, spend half an hour convincing my SNES to take it, and try the code. "Super strong" is 255 in every stat, it turns out. "Hmm", says I, recalling the aforementioned message board conversation, "that was a lot easier than getting cavities from Rock Candy and Sugar Packets. I wonder if the stats roll back to 0 at level up, like someone said." (If you're that someone, and you're reading this, please don't be too offended that I don't remember who you are).

Shortly into the game, a green swirl taking the place of a fight with a Runaway Dog gives Ness the 4 experience points needed to advance to Level 2. With said level gained, Ness sprouted more than 3000 HP and 1000 PP, and no stat bonuses (for the remainder of this article, it may be assumed that I couldn't see all of Ness' HP and PP on the normal meter, but his status screen clearly stated the inflated statistics).

At level 3 a few green swirls later, Ness recieved a handful of HP and PP, and... no statbonuses.

Frank Fly was defeated at level 6, with no stat changes up to that point. Titanic Ant was defeated at level 9, again, with no stat changes. The game blacked out on the way to Orange Kid's house. I haven't resumed it.

So... do stats roll back to 0? As far as I know, no. But then again, the Game Genie does strange things to the way games work, perhaps the GG was "protecting" the stats from rolling over? For any of you who wish to look into this yourselves, the code is EE2E-7D01.
