Competition for the Mass

Moonside.Net is gone. Type http://moonside.net into your browser and you'll be directed to Zeal, Jeb's new site on RPGs. Pretty much everyone finds this most depressing; while they're ecstatic about this new project, they'll miss the old site. Most depressed is reid. He's always wanted good competition with SM.Net, but that's kind of asking for a lot.

Part I: Why is it such a struggle?

There is an online community for an anime called Card Captor Sakura. This community has several sites that are all in direct-yet-friendly competition. "How is it," you ask, "that a number of sites can achieve that?" Good you ask, because that's what I'm here to tell you. Each site in that community hasn't nearly the amount of content that SM.Net has. This is because the content is spread out. That community is all about originality in site content. Because of that, aside from natural things like episode guides, the sites all have different things and due to their small portions of content, they can easily do interesting things like change their layouts.

This is a nearly impossible with Starmen.Net, as about everything you could have in a video game fansite is in there. All the little sites can do is come up with maybe one original thing, if even one.

Part II: So, what can be done?

Judging by the way this community functions, either some people will have to sit down and brainstorm their faces off until they come up with good stuff the SM.Net doesn't have and that they can team up to put into one site, or SM.Net would have to actually breakdown and give some content to other sites.

Starmen.Net could have the deep game info and be the center of the community with maybe a little fanstuff. Another site could handle the majority of Fanfics, fanart, flukes, etc. Another site after that could have to come up with never-before-widely-used-on-SM.Net stuff, like Interactive Fanfics and Oekaki and put in stuff like tons of game sprites or something. Of course, each site would have little descriptions of the game and its own forums.

That's all I can think of to make competition actually be.

Part III: I'm sick of reading. Conclude this, already.

Of course, what I have put here stretches merely across the mind of one person. I now encourage everyone to start posting their threads and articles on what can be done to give reidman what he wants: a swift kick out of the spotlight.
