The Origin of Giant Step - by Fishsticks

The Origin of Giant Step

On a hill not too far from Ness's house, there sits an unusual marking known as Giant Step. Now, this is unusual for several reasons. The obvious one is size; the only thing in the game that could possibly leave a footprint of that magnitude would be the Chomposaur, and yet the footprint is more human in shape, so that's not very likely. Also, generally footprints come more than one at a time; if something left that particular footprint, it would have probably left other footprints in the general vicinity, and yet there are none visible. So both the what and how of the cause of this footprint are unknown.

So, to find out the origin of this footprint, we must first examine what we know.

1) This footprint is large. Either it was made by some large object, a number of small objects, or a few small objects but a lot of time.
2) The footprint is, for our purposes, at the edge of the world. There are no towns or anything of significance directly to the north of Onett. Along those lines, it's in a rural part of Onett; there are only a few residences nearby.
3) The footprint is solitary. Something managed to make this footprint without leaving any others nearby, showing that this footprint wasn't just the result of something idly walking by.
4) The footprint is a sanctuary. It has some sort of power that fills in the first part of Ness's sound stone; and for some reason, it makes Ness think of "a small, cute puppy."

Now, the solitary footprint suggests that if a creature of some sort left that marking, it would have to be capable of either very long jumps or flight to leave a single footprint. Most large creatures, however, are not known for being able to remain airborne for any great distance, though. So the only way for such a creature to make it there; and that was by means of a some sort of vehicle. If we follow this line, though, it doesn't seem like any land vehicle would be able to reach Giant Step. The step is surrounded by several sheer cliffs, and the only way to get there seems to be through a cave that involves climbing. So we need some kind of flying vehicle.

This poses a problem, though. The entire world in this game seems to not understand the concept of airports, instead relying on things such as "boats" or "teleportation." So airplanes are out of the question (of course, there's not really enough room to land an airplane at Giant Step anyway). However, there is one flying vehicle in the game: the Sky Runner. The sky runner, in fact, was created by none other than Dr. Andonuts, who happens to keep in his employment a caveman... with very large feet. So it seems that sometime in the past, Dr. Andonuts had flown to Onett for some reason with his caveman, and landed where Giant step currently is.

This explains the origin of the footprint, but it still doesn't quite explain how the footprint got its powers, or why Dr. Andonuts was there in the first place. But it seems possible that these events are connected. Perhaps ten years ago, Dr. Andonuts must have come up with a new alloy which he made a statue out of. However, the new compound contained in it some water from Rainy Circle, which was already a well-known source of strange powers at the time (I may cover this in a later article). It didn't take too long for Dr. Andonuts to realize that the statue had inherited some of these powers, and it wasn't safe. He had to get rid of it. So he left Jeff with a friend at the Boarding school (little did he realize that this would become a permanent arrangement), then had his caveman help carry the statue to a remote region of Onett to bury it. Giant Step gained its power from having this Mani-Mani statue buried under it; ten years later, Lier X. Aggerate would discover the statue after digging a long tunnel to the west out from under his house. Also, having the statue so near his house while he was growing up could have been part of the cause of Ness's psychokinetic ability.

So the only thing left unresolved is why the sanctuary makes Ness think of a puppy. I cannot explain this, so I will take the cheap way out and say that the explanation is beyond the scope of this article. Oops, too bad.
