How I came upon Starmen.net
Well, a lot of people have "How I Found Starmen.net" or "When I first Came Here" articles. I just recently sent an entry in for the second Starmen.net Essay contest, and decided I like to write articles, so I'm making a few more. So anyway, here is my first article.
In about 1997, I was introduced to the Internet. All I did was go on it, and send one or two e-mails to family members, and get off. I was only 7, and wasn't all too sure of what to do on the Internet. Then, I remember my dad really got me into pictures, sounds, and recordings. I was only seven, but I was already telling the difference between JPEGs and BMPs, knew all these things about KB and MB, and could use the Internet fairly well. Also, when I was seven, I was really getting into gaming (In years before all I did was play Mario Paint and Atari, according to my Mom). I got a Sega Genesis, and started to get a lot of games for my Super Nintendo and Nintendo, slowly getting into RPGs, Fighting games, and Adventure games.
Then, when I was eight, I was using jIRC, Sending mail, had a few friends, introduced myself to a few gaming sites, got many many songs/pictures, made slideshows, recordings, and all sorts of things. I was introduced to EarthBound this year, also. I loved it, but considering I got stuck before Twoson, you can imagine I wasn't that great of a gamer back then. Then I just forgot about EB. Anyway, all I did was play games, and use jIRC on this one site called "Chat Family."
Early 2000, I went over to my friends house. He was on 'Starmen.net', an interesting site to me at the time. I asked if it could help me play Earthbound. He said sure, and gave me the link. I got on at home, and went on the site. I really got into it. I checked out all sorts of things, and finally was able to beat Earthbound by 2001. I was only 11, and I wanted to be a part of Starmen.net, but never really liked forums at that time.
So, I went to my friends one day to see if he could play. He was on IRC, something else that was interesting to me. He got me on, and I was in a whole world of fun. But, I wasn't very liked. I talked like an AOLer, was a moron, and basically hated. I'd talk to bots, flood, and CONSTANTLY ask to be invited into #Earthbound, as it was still invite only. I would rather not give out my old name though.
I left IRC. After an event that no one would forgive me for, I just left. I still went to Starmen.net, laughed, loved it. I thought it was a great site. Now, just recently, I got a new computer. I downloaded IRC... Got a new screen name. I would be known as "ChaosKnight," and try to be intelligent. I was pleased to see invite only was off #Earthbound. I was pleased to see old names I remember from when I was a moron, and get to like them. I was overall happy. A month later, I joined the forums. I just loved the site.
I still do. Now I am doing well. I have been here as ChaosKnight for eight months, have around 20 friends, have operator access in a few channels on IRC, a decent amount of forum post (on the new forums), I'm submitting more things, and becoming known. Barely known, but a lot of people know who I am. And, I don;t really have anyone that really really hates me.
Basically, I found SM.NET from a friend, and am glad I did. I'd be an AOLer with no life if it weren't for this site. It is truly a great site that makes me feel like I am at home.
