Prologue - Page 3: Escape into the Woods

For those who haven't played the game, or have a very good memory of it, you'll find out, much MUCH later, exactly WHAT it is that is above George and Maria's house (or you can just play Mother and it'll tell you right there in the two paragraphs in the opening narration).
What I'm most proud of in this page is the fifth panel (the long one that dives under Maria's "What is THAT above our house?!" panel and juts out a bit under the third) - I absolutely nailed what I had in my head for that shot, and it also gives a glimpse at what I love so much about the landscapes of Mother. If you don't pay much attention to the detail anywhere else on this page, study this panel carefully. At the left end you can see George and Maria in the distance entering the forest, and at the right end is a pair of mysterious legs and a tail descending slowly in front of their home.
The dialogue of the panic-stricken couple was quite touch-and-go for me. I wasn't exactly sure what direction I wanted them to escape, but I wanted Mothersday Town to be mentioned, so I made that their planned route (BTW, I found out recently that the holiday Mother's Day didn't even exist in 1906, much less a town named after it...). Then I needed an outlet for the couple, someONE they could run to. So, using the concept of simple names like "George", I had him mention, in passing, some guy named "James". At first, James only existed for the sake of George mentioning someone they could run to, but as I was illustrating page 7, I found a way to use James further as not only as an outlet, but as THE outlet to represent a family friend's reaction to all that's about to happen. Yes, we'll get to see James in person later, and he'll come strongly into play.

It wasn't until I gave James the line "Why did you bring the boy?" that I realized I must have unconsciously designed him after James "Jimmy" Stewart (the line reminded me of the movie "Shenandoah", where Stewart refers to his own son as "the boy", when speaking to his wife's grave after a huge mess of tragedy happens to the family - he names off everyone in his family that was killed, and since his son was sent into the Civil War against his will, Stewart's character had not heard anything of him for years, and so he adds to his wife "...and probably the boy..."

I wanted this scene to be extrememly tense. Hopefully I communicated that well.

I love that first panel on the bottom row. George is sitting on the bed staring at his feet like a naughty little boy and Suzannah and James are like his parents scolding him :)

The line "George use to be a journalist" is my tribute to the Encyclopedia Mother, which gives a more detailed account of the history of George and Maria (tells how they got together and fell in love, etc.). By the time I finally got the Encyclopedia (a couple of months back?), I had already had in my head more-or-less what I wanted the entire prologue to encompass, so when I translated the George-and-Maria backstory in the Encyclopedia, I found that account didn't fit 100% with mine, and it was too late to change the pages I had already illustrated, and I was also unwilling to change the ideas I had for the remainder of the prologue. However, I was able to work in the idea that George was a big-time journalist for a famous newspaper, and that his work was what brought him to Mothersday Town, where he met Maria.
However, it's only this wink that connects my story with the Encyclopedia's.

In starting this page, I found myself lost. I knew how I wanted this scene to culminate (you'll see what happens in the next page), but had no clue as to how to bring it about. This was one of those moments where picking up the pencil and just drawing it panel-by-panel enlightened me, so that I knew what direction to take. It was quite a miraculous touch-and-go, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.
