Obsession - by Elobo

Obsession

Uploading my shoddy fanfest shlock. [ebff2011] "She was a simple hobbyist, her passion keeping her out of nasty associations like Happhy Happyisms and the Fresh Breeze Movement. She didn't dabble in Burglin Park's illicit condiment trade. She didn't join in the midnight vigils of Orange Kid's most staunch admirers. No, she thrust herself headlong onto the exhausting path of an ace mycologist. She poured her energy, her time, her money into her craft. She gave it her life and her livelihood. She accrued so many mushrooms. So many. Why did she need them? It was excessive, the obsession consumed her. The need to separate herself from the normal cliques, and then the need to once again belong. The fibrous hivemind of Peaceful Rest Valley's mushrooms. A direct neural link to the planet. Everyone an extension of the same organism, everyone beloved by everyone else. Intoxicating. Humanity was a small sacrifice. Her collection reached critical mass, and she began collecting everything else. People. Trees. The Valley. She is the valley now, they all are. She dearly wants you to fee the same feeling of oneness, of true belonging. She wants the Earth. She wants to become it. The natural primordial push towards survival compounded by human obsession."

Here's that focal mechanism again. The sun is important to this story, it often sets an unstated mood. But look in the background, a kid will make the connection between it being there now, and somewhere else on a later page. It marks that arrow lizard as something Bushie will interact with.

There are a few wordy pages in this books, ie: betwixt. I firmly believe that the audience shouldn't be patronized. Kids should ask questions about stories regardless, so some vocabulary thrown into the mix can't hurt.

Uh oh, what's all this then? There are a few hooks like this that will have later consequences. Though there is an overarching plot there are a few lessons along the way.

The Ramblin' Mushroom here does not factor into the story, so he has not been brought to full attention. This technique also lets me populate the Forest with other creatures without stuffing them down someone's throat. It shows that other stories are unfolding all around this one, and a kid can extrapolate the stories themselves. I think this benefits a story that otherwise directs you from beginning to end.

With the other characters here I should talk about the artstyle. This was chosen as a combination of factors. I found it appealing, and I also figured it would set it apart stylistically from a lot of the other offerings. You'll notice that only the main characters or those that interact with Bushie are coloured in. This is a focal conceit.
