Prologue - Page 3: Escape into the Woods

For those who haven't played the game, or have a very good memory of it, you'll find out, much MUCH later, exactly WHAT it is that is above George and Maria's house (or you can just play Mother and it'll tell you right there in the two paragraphs in the opening narration).
What I'm most proud of in this page is the fifth panel (the long one that dives under Maria's "What is THAT above our house?!" panel and juts out a bit under the third) - I absolutely nailed what I had in my head for that shot, and it also gives a glimpse at what I love so much about the landscapes of Mother. If you don't pay much attention to the detail anywhere else on this page, study this panel carefully. At the left end you can see George and Maria in the distance entering the forest, and at the right end is a pair of mysterious legs and a tail descending slowly in front of their home.
The dialogue of the panic-stricken couple was quite touch-and-go for me. I wasn't exactly sure what direction I wanted them to escape, but I wanted Mothersday Town to be mentioned, so I made that their planned route (BTW, I found out recently that the holiday Mother's Day didn't even exist in 1906, much less a town named after it...). Then I needed an outlet for the couple, someONE they could run to. So, using the concept of simple names like "George", I had him mention, in passing, some guy named "James". At first, James only existed for the sake of George mentioning someone they could run to, but as I was illustrating page 7, I found a way to use James further as not only as an outlet, but as THE outlet to represent a family friend's reaction to all that's about to happen. Yes, we'll get to see James in person later, and he'll come strongly into play.

I had to do some correction work on Ninten's mom's neck in two panels. Her head was turned toward the phone, but her body was faced fully forward on the couch. It was beginning to look like the possessed house wasn't the only reason why these folks needed an exorcist...
And although it's long-forgotten, Tomato helped me figure out the whole business about Rap Phenomena... way back when I first joined the forum about three years ago. So thanks, Mato!

In starting this page, I found myself lost. I knew how I wanted this scene to culminate (you'll see what happens in the next page), but had no clue as to how to bring it about. This was one of those moments where picking up the pencil and just drawing it panel-by-panel enlightened me, so that I knew what direction to take. It was quite a miraculous touch-and-go, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

I've discovered something interesting about myself. I get my best humorous inspiration when it's late at night (read: early in the morning) and I'm sleep-deprived. Maybe I ought to try that from now on whenever I need to think of a good punchline for my comics.

You've always wondered what the flippant MOTHER battles would look like if translated to visual format... and here you go.

Chapter 2 will be sort of like my Halloween Funfest comic from 2007, except with a more fleshed-out story and plenty of "deleted scenes" in between - not to mention, of course, colored pages and a different ending.
The sarcophagus in the middle of the first panel was based on one I saw while at college. Just outside of my dorm building, visible from the windows on the north side, was a large cemetery (I wonder if that says anything about the quality of life in those dorms?), and as I was walking past it one day, I noticed an enormous headstone with this incredibly somber-looking statue, so when I illustrated my Halloween comic, I decided to go down into the cemetery with my art supplies, and add that and a few other gravestones in for touch.
Pippi's late father's name is Marlon for a number of reasons. For one, I'm not too great with naming characters, and I tend to let my mind go into "roulette mode" until it lands on a name I think would fit. Fortunately, the name Marlon wound up fitting almost bizzarely perfectly in the grand scheme of things. You'll see what I'm talking about toward the end of the chapter. Also, it's kind of funny when you realize I fan-named his wife Marilyn. Marlon and Marilyn... it's like I did that on purpose.
Finally, I just have to draw attention to the lizard. I'm not sure if this is the sort of habitat one would find a lizard in, but I think it was the MOTHER Encyclopedia, once again, that gave me the idea to have Pippi get herself lost while chasing one
