Let me start this article by saying that this is my twentieth article, including the one I wrote for the essay content. I believe I am the first non-staffer to accomplish this feat. I would have never thought about doing this when I first started writing articles for this great site. This article will not be a self-promotion like my tenth article was (the shame), this is actually going to be a real article. Now, without further adieu, the article.
This is the sixth installment in the EB's Greatest Mysteries series. In case you didn't know, this is the series where I take some of the most mysterious aspects of EarthBound, examine them, and propose some possible explanations for them. In this installment, I will examine one of the oddest locales in the whole game.
You are about halfway through EB. Your party now consists of only Ness, Paula, and Jeff, but there is room for one more. At this point in time, our three heroes are enjoying a "relaxing" stay in the tropical vista that is Summers. You all of a sudden have an urge to go partying, so you visit the local club, the Stoic Club. In there, you hear about a lady who is making some delicious cake. You immediately go in search of this lady. Upon finding here, you find out that the cake she gives you is her last, made with "special" ingredients. You immediately eat the cake, not giving any thought to it, and something happens. For this is not just any cake, this is Magic Cake. After eating it, everything goes blurry. You are then warped to the strangest place you have seen yet, Dalaam.
No, this article is not about the Magic Cake. After all, this is a family article. No, this article is about the result of Magic Cake, Dalaam. To the unsuspecting eye, Dalaam does not look very unusual. It looks like nothing more than some Japanese village on a mountain. I advise such a person to look closer, for Dalaam is about as weird as it gets.
There are many things that make Dalaam so strange. First of all, the way you get there. The whole Magic Cake/ blur effect makes it seem as though Dalaam is nothing more than a dream. Also, if you look at the "town" closely, you will see that there is no bottom to it. It is just like a big island floating in the air. The weirdest of all is that the game makes it seem as if it is Ness that is controlling Poo during your first visit in Dalaam.
All things seem to point to Dalaam being a dream, but wait one darn second. If it was a dream, then how come Poo actually comes and meets Ness? How come you can go back there again throughout the course of the game? Also, the people in Dalaam pray for you at the end of the game. Dalaam cannot be a dream. It just wouldn't make any sense.
What, then, is Dalaam? I think it is simply a mountain village. The clouds probably just block the land below. The remaining mystery is how come Ness sees it after eating Magic Cake. I think that the mixture of leftover ingredients in the cake probably set off some Psychic switch in his mind that let him see Poo somehow.
