The Tutorial:

Channels was an extremely popular game for DJ Fly-Boi Mathyz's Saturday Night Radio PSI. Games used for Channels were often from Super Nintendo, Nintendo, or Game Boy.

The game of Channels is quite simple to understand. The three systems mentioned above use a technology for their music, which consists of 4-8 separate channels that represent one or a number of instruments for in-game music. Plug-ins for WinAMP support muting many channels at a time.

Using this technology, DJ Fly-Boi Mathyz hosted a game that pretty much consists of guessing which game a song is from. But with Channels, all but two sound channels were muted at the beginning, leaving, at first, usually just the bassline and drumbeat. As intervals of 20 seconds passed, more channels were unmuted until the one minute mark, when all channels had been unmuted, and the song, in full, played for one more minute.

The object of the game, of course, was to correctly guess which game the song comes from, with the success of guessing correctly before all channels have been unmuted being a badge of honor or nerdiness, depending on who you talk to. A specific number of wins got you actual badges on the forum, denoting, in increments of five, how many times you've won.

The number of actual channels, and number of channels unmuted at 20 second intervals depended on the system, and ease of recognition.

The Rules:

  • Guess the video game the song comes from before the music fades out.
  • Your latest guess is the only one that will count. The reasoning behind this rule is to discourage people from randomly guessing dozens of games before Channels is over.
  • You are required to answer with the FULL title of the game. That includes title, sequel number (differentiation between Roman and Arabic numerals not required), and subtitle. This directly discourages people from getting a quick win from people legitimately attempting to type out the full title.
  • I.E. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time". NOT "Turtles In Time", "TMNT 4", etc.

The third rule is concluded by seeing what the full title is on the box art.
